Exactly. At first I thought: "posted 4 days ago, stond supporting adult content on May 12th already?!" But then I saw they have already created an alternative. To add to that, old links will keep working. That's pretty great.

Splitting the website in two is also pretty smart for both users and the site admins. It will make sure there is a clear distinction between adult content and normal content and you can never accidentally cross that border in the site itself.

This will only really be a cosmetic change, they don't want the gfycat name plastered over porn, but internally, it'll probably be handled exactly the same, with only front-end being different.

This may be the first time I have seen a company handle this properly - well done to gfycat.

Links to your adult content will be transferred to redgifs.com as of May 12, 2020; this ensures that anything you shared and posted in the past will not turn into a broken link.

It’s not really banning adult content, just moving it into its own silo. That makes sense.

This is not at all comparable to what happened to Tumblr.

Tumblr's problem was that it took an incredibly poorly thought-out approach to it's restrictions: It gave the community very little head's up, was both vague yet weirdly specific about their criteria for pornography (e.g. "female presenting nipples", whatever that's supposed to mean) and appeared to more or less flip the switch on it overnight instead of gradually phasing the new rules in. On top of this they used an automated image classifier to weed out pornography, which was clearly not well-trained and produced quite a few false-positives and false-negatives, at least enough to make it a subject of derision online. There's always an issue with NSFW in that not everyone agrees on where the lines are between artful nudity, eroticism, and full-on pornography, but Tumblr's new management basically just took a sledgehammer and started flailing around, hoping to eventually hit nails.

The result was a bunch of artists were caught completely off-guard and had to trawl through their archives to remove offending pictures, some of which weren't even that salacious to begin with, but also lost their means to communicate this to their followers unless said followers knew their other socials. So if you're the kind of person who actually earns money from their art you're suddenly in a pickle: you're either banned or facing a ban, you have no good way of knowing when it'll happen or how to avoid it, and if it happens you are potentially cut off from your customers with no means to reach them.

On top of this Tumblr completely bungled their communication and failed to reassure people that the site wasn't going to ban them. So many people just up and left because they weren't willing to take the risk, and since everyone else around them was either panicking or leaving as well there was nothing really to dissuade them. Add to this that some other people left in protest of the new rules, others left in solidarity with the former, and most left because they just wanted to follow the content of all aforementioned groups, and you get the perfect storm.

Also, that's another issue Tumblr's new management brought on themselves: they seemed completely unaware of what kind of community they actually had. Tumblr had become popular in no small part as a refuge for LiveJournal users after LJ was acquired by a Russian company and started cracking down on LGBT content. Had management actually considered this they probably could have realized that coming out with a crackdown of their own was not going to be taken well, even if it was pornography in general and not just LGBT-related.

Tumblr's case was one of poor planning and execution. This is not that, they're not comparable just because they both involve restrictions on NSFW content.

      Side note:

Apparently it was over 90% on tumblr before they banned adult stuff?

People really need to stop throwing this number around. It's pretty much an immediate signal that somebody doesn't know what they're talking about. Tumblr's actual percentage of NSFW work produced was an incredibly small part of the site's content, the perception mostly came from how easy it was to amplify (i.e. reblog) and because perception biases make people believe their use of a website must be similar to everyone else's. so "tumblr is 90% porn" started as a joke, which became a hyperbolic truism, and eventually was just accepted as fact despite having no actual basis in reality whatsoever.

They aren't really distancing themselves, they're splitting up their site into two. They still support adult content, just at another web address.

And there is absolutely no name recognition involved in this. None whatsoever.

See, I find this hypocritical: a New Media company separate "mainstream" content and "adult" content into two separate streams on an infrastructure basis, but one of them gets bashed because "we kristian noe", and another gets praised because "well, they did help the people transition".

        So which one is it?

Why not leave the same content on the old website? Why move it at all? It's not as if they had to if they can support both now; it's not as if they're suddenly experiencing an overflow of data and have to outsource it to someone.

My suspicion is pretty much the same: they want to open up for more family-friendly ads, in order to expand their business. Good on them. My problem is that their solution, much like Tumblr's, was to segregate the content. Somehow, it just doesn't sit well with me that porn has to be put into a tight corner because of bunch of people don't want to pay to have their flashy advertisement shown next to a naked girl's butt.

It doesn't have to be in a corner, it just tends to be, because most parents aren't cool with their kids seeing women get blasted in the face with semen right next to their fortnite gifs.

The two aren't comparable situations at all. Tumblr banned content without giving adult creators on their site a new way to host their content. As Tumblr was about 90% porn and 10% leftist teenagers screeching about the patriarchy, the site tumbled into irrelevancy, because everyone over the age of 16 was there for the porn and nothing else.

Gfycat isn't really banning anything, they just moved it to a new domain. They're also allowing for easy transfers of your account and your content, so they're clearly interested in:

      1. Keeping the adult community happy
      2. Keep hosting adult content

I don't understand how this wasn't obvious alone from the title.

Yeah that’s a super inaccurate and biased view of tumblr. People shit on tumblr all the time but in my experience, tumblr has by far the most welcoming, talented, and insightful community. I see a higher frequency of more in depth, better researched, polite discussions every day on tumblr than I see on Hacker News, Tildes, or Reddit. Not a slam on any of those sites because they’re all solid in their own ways. But if I had to choose one site to be the basis of internet communities going forward 10000% I would pick tumblr.

Thank you for the clarification. People who used Tumblr exclusively for porn don't understand what the hell else was going on at that website. It had a very large art and creative community, it was so much more than just porn, and it was always more than just porn, it doesn't matter how many people went there exclusively for NSFW content, there were a lot of better things there than just porn. But we do have to acknowledge the absolute toxicity within some of the communities there.

Tumblr has the same issue as Twitter in that retweets/reblogging with comments and hashtags are very conducive to starting fights and mobbing people. Part of it was the site's culture, which skewed young and had a significant amount of people dealing with their own mental issues, but this isn't especially new online. The way a system works can amplify those issues.

Like, this is part of why some Subreddits used bots to warn them whenever a thread was linked in another subreddit, especially a drama-related one. That's usually how Reddit slapfights get worse.

I agree that "fuck you" is a harsh response, but I want to take a second and discuss WHY there is a lot of strong sense of defense here. I want to do this because, especially on Tildes, I feel like people care more about decorum and tone than they do understanding the emotions people have. How is this not an insulting tone to take?

As Tumblr was about 90% porn and 10% leftist teenagers screeching about the patriarchy, the site tumbled into irrelevancy, because everyone over the age of 16 was there for the porn and nothing else.

It is a condescending statement that anyone who uses tumblr was either there for porn or the caricature of SJW's, again said in a tone obviously meant to imply it is an bad thing or an insult. I'm amazed by how many people see people insult a community, a member of the community is offended that someone is being an asshole to them, and the highest-voted first response in this community is "WOW. SOMEONE woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning". Maybe they did. Does that make the first comment any less of an attack? Tumblr was the first home and community of so many people in marginalized groups. It became an internet punching bag because 4chan and reddit figured out that its easy to demonize a site that isn't popular among straight dudes by posting screenshots of fringes of the community and got the whole internet to treat its users like idiots and infants. I wish I would see people use 1/3 the energy they use to police the people getting punched in the comment section to respond to the people originally being rude.

Whatever. I give up. I’m tired of feeling insane and like an outcast for trying to explain that constant indirect attacks hurt just as much as a direct one and equally derail discussion and equally contribute little. Fuck it. I kept hanging onto hope that this site might become more than Reddit’s shitty views w/ a requirement to put makeup on it first but I’ve fought this fight so many times and seemingly every other user who agreed with me left so why keep trying.

Considering the care you take to mention fringes of the community you do really lump every other website into one big pot. I've spent a lot of time on reddit, and yet I'm not the kind of person that agrees with subreddits like r/incels or /theredpill or whatever (you know, fringes of the community). There are good places on reddit and there are bad places on reddit. There are also good places on 4chan and some really fucking what the actual fuck is going on places on 4chan. It's the same with tumblr.

You probably feel like you need to defend the place because you connect good memories with it. It's okay to like tumblr. I honestly don't care what websites you spend your time on.
