Good to know. I wonder if WeChat gets much use outside China?

        To speculate a bit:

It seems like changing the software you use is becoming another form of cultural adjustment for immigrants, along with all the other things people need to learn and get used to?

Many organizations try to make their software useful and popular all over the world, so this encourages uniformity. Also, worldwide standards help a lot.

But if the gaps become too big, it might not be possible for the same software to be popular everywhere, and similarity in software ecosystems might eventually be more like similarity in language. And there will be more work for those who can bridge the gap.

Haven’t thought of the immigrant experience like that. I’ve got family stuck with me in the states now and watching them adjust has some parallels. It’s their first visit to the states and they’ve been here for several months now, but daily WeChat use is still here. I’ve noticed they have started looking at supplemental news sources besides CCTV without any nudging.

Another technology hurdle was getting chinese-language Televaion content. They’ll watch dramas on the Roku but I had to teach them how to use it in English because there’s no Chinese option for basically any applications despite shows being in Chinese/Japanese/Korean.

I used it once to speak with my ex-girlfriend when she was in Dalian doing a fashion show. LINE was blocked in China.
