Not that I am aware of. I am on the latest version, 84.0.4147.89 (Official Build) (64-bit), and the only time the minimize/maximize/close buttons disappear for me is when I am in fullscreen (F11) mode, which is expected behavior. You may have been selected for an A/B test, but I suspect something else is going on.

To make sure it isn't an extension you should load chrome in safe mode by right clicking on your chrome shortcut, clicking on Properties -> Shortcut, adding --disable-extensions to the end of the Target: line and saving that change by clicking OK. Now load chrome via that shortcut. If that fixes it, it's likely an extension issue and you will need to identify which one by reloading chrome in normal mode (undo what you did above) and disabling them one by one until you find the culprit.

If disabling extensions doesn't fix it, remove the --disable-extensions, reload chrome normally, and then go to your chrome Settings -> Advanced -> Reset and clean up -> Restore to their original settings. However just be aware that will completely reset your chrome, including disabling all extensions and deleting all your cookies.

And if neither of those fixes it, you could try uninstalling and reinstalling chrome.

p.s. If none of the above works then this may have something to do with you still running Windows 7, and so you may be shit out of luck until they fix the issue on their end.

That would result in losing everything, right? All my bookmarks (and I have a lot of bookmarks)?

And yes, I'm pretty sure that uninstalling chrome will delete your bookmarks... unless you have Chrome Sync enabled (click your profile pic in top right, and see if "Sync in on" is there. If not there should be a "Turn Sync on" or something to that effect there instead. Turn it on and let it run for a bit, then you can "review your synced data" to make sure it's all there. Afterwards you should be able to uninstall chrome, reinstall it and when you log back in and turn Sync on again, it should resync and add all your bookmarks and such back. You can (and probably should) also back them up manually as well though. You need to locate your Google\Chrome\User Data\Default directory and copy all the Bookmarks files in there to somewhere safe. That directory structure should be in C:\Users(yourWindowsUsername)\Appdata\Local, at least they are on Win 10, but I don't know if that's the same on Win 7.

But I've done this before, when I uninstalled Windows XP and installed Windows 7 some years back. I know there's a way to back up my bookmarks (I'll have to look for it). I just need to know to back them up before I go and delete them all!

Restore settings shouldn't delete your bookmarks, but given you are already experiencing some bugs you never know, so it's better to be safe than sorry. :P

Let me know how it all goes, if you need any more help, and if the other options manage to fix the issue for you. If not, I can try to google around a bit and maybe look in the chromium issues to see if anyone else is reporting similar problems.

"Restore to original settings" fixed the problem. I then enabled my extensions one by one (I don't have many), and the problem didn't come back. Strange. Oh well, the problem's fixed. Thank you!...

Now all I have to is remind Google of all my passwords... :)

Step one is always run chrome in safe/sandbox/with no extensions active. It's more likely that some extension you have installed is causing the issue than Chrome itself.

I don't have a sandbox. I haven't installed any new extensions for months. The change only happened this week.

That's useful to know. Thanks. I know! It takes longer to work through a set of helpful instructions than to reply to a comment. :)

another thing you might not like is the new extensions menu. chrome://flags/#extensions-toolbar-menu -- disable it and you'll go back to the old one.

I still access the extensions page via: Settings > Extensions. I don't know about a new menu. (It's not like I look at my extensions very often!) But thanks.

If you hide any from showing in your main toolbar, in the hamburger menu we used to have the extensions at the top of the menu. They changed with the latest version and I hate it :)

It's handy to hide extensions that you don't actively use or ones that don't have options. They added a new Extensions menu that, while nice, is annoying if you're used to the old way where everything is organized to your own preference.

Okay. You can just ignore the response instead of replying like this. It’s unnecessary. You were troubleshooting changes with the most recent update, this is also one of them.

I tried to be as specific as I could, so I didn't waste anyone's time on issues I didn't need help with, but it appears I wasn't successful. I'll try harder next time.
