But the Apple device (probably touch or the new SE) will last longer and have much better support than your average midrange Android phone. So if you just don't want to worry about it in the future, that's a good choice.

But there are few devices that can't fulfill your needs at this point.

The iPhone 6S is still getting software updates 5 years later. Given that the new iPhone SE has nearly identical hardware to the iPhone 11, it's not unreasonable to guess it will also get flagship-level support and you'll get updates through 2025. Even after you stop getting the newest iOS for the SE, you'll still be able to use it for music and video playback as long as it's still working.

If you want to get a higher-end experience, you might want to look for a used LG V20. While I haven't had one personally, I'm told they have an excellent DAC for audiophile-quality sound. Plus they have removable batteries which you can still purchase new today.

Whenever you ask a question online, however basic or advanced, never simply write only "Never mind solved" or "I figured it out" or equivalent, but expand on that to provide the answer or solution you discovered.

Imagine you have a different question and search to try and find an answer or solution. Imagine your unbounded joy to find someone else had the same (or very similar) question or problem as you.

Now imagine your incredible frustration to discover they only wrote "Never mind I found the answer" WITHOUT SAYING WHAT IT IS!

It is however borne of genuine, bitter frustration and as usual there's a relevant xkcd.

The intent was to make things just a little better, not to control you.

For what it's worth, iPads typically come in two versions -- one with WiFi and cellular capabilities, and the other with just WiFi. The WiFi-only ones can get relatively cheap for what you're getting.

There's a lot of room for interpretation here - do you plan on using it on the go a lot, so you'd want something that's easily hand held, or would you be looking for something more for the bed or for long trips? If portability is the primary concern, I'd recommend an old Android device - pretty much any will do, though if the primary purpose is media consumption, definitely look for something with a MicroSD slot if you intend to play your own files. You can get a Galaxy S3 or S4, or the mini versions of each, in great condition, for around $60 or $70. I personally use a much older Epic 4G, a phone from 2010, for this purpose, and it does the job excellently with a 256GB card.

If you'd prefer something more tablet sized, I'd recommend something like a Samsung Galaxy Tab A or the older Galaxy Tab S2, particularly the 8" size. I have the S2 and it's really nice - it has a MicroSD slot for easy media loading, the screen is fantastic, and it's the perfect balance of large enough to be comfortable while small enough to easily carry around. You do get some letterboxing on 16:9 media though, since the screen is a 4:3 aspect ratio one, in case that bothers you. I believe the Tab A's are 16:9, so they won't have any black bars, though I don't think they're as nice in the other ways (for example, the screen resolution's significantly lower).

The only issue I see with buying a smartphone is that they will nag you about not having a SIM card installed. Otherwise they make excellent portable media machines. If you want something pocketable that doesn't double as a smartphone, the iPod Touch is probably your best bet. I don't think the lack of software support 5 years down the line is a huge issue if apps and web browsing aren't the primary use.
