Apple has given Epic Games an indefinite extension for their use of Apple's SSO
@Epic Games Store:
UPDATE: Apple previously stated they would terminate "Sign In with Apple" support for Epic Games accounts after Sept 11, 2020, but today provided an indefinite extension. We still recommend you prepare your accounts now for "Sign In with Apple" removal. https://t.co/hUDCKcajGo
Must have realized it was a terrible, horrible no-good idea.
As I’ve said in a previous thread on this fiasco, people need to stop taking Epic’s word on this. The Verge is reporting that Apple says it never threatened to shut down Apple SSO for Epic at all.
It would look bad if Apple threatened to shut down Apple SSO for a customer’s service. It would look worse if that was a customer that they were in a lawsuit with. It would look worse still if they backtracked or reverted that. But, it’s not clear from any authoritative source that that is what happened.
You know what would also look really bad? If Epic made all this up. I can’t find any authoritative source on that either. Most “news” media have just uncritically parroted what Epic is saying. AFAICT, this is par for the course for click-bait, Apple-bashing, facts be damned, “journalism”.
Apparently nobody knows for sure what happened. Maybe we should just stick with that?
Yes, that’s what I’m advocating. Too much speculation in the media from non-neutral sources. That said, it seems like a bone-headed move from Apple, and we know Epic has a major axe to grind. I’m speculating (as an onlooker, not as a responsible journalist) this was all made up, but I’ll wait to get the facts.
I still feel like a lot of damage has been done already. It’s not as bad as really shutting it off, but it still leaves a bad feeling when using it. Especially since it is the newest SSO in the game
This will rather perpetuate the idea that Epic got extension because they were big enough to cause a ruckus.
There was no winning move here for Apple.
Global Single Sign-on is a terrible idea in general.
