Top post from discussion sums it up well:

Too much of the functioning of the world is dependent on Excel and Access. This should be an immense concern to absolutely everyone.

Because nobody backs up and versions their spreadsheets properly. They get corrupted and data gets lost, overridden, or dropped from poor sharing and merging. Email is the most common form of updating them.

The worst offenders have data exported from a database to do manipulation to later (if we're lucky) re-import it.

For the love of God people... spreadsheets should not be used for anything more than a glorified calculator. And if you are going to insist..at least do it on a server-side version so there's at least a remote chance of recovery.

This techdirt article appears to consist of pretty much nothing of substance beyond the quotes it pulled from the BBC article that broke this story, and was previously submitted and discussed here...

Incidentally, this style of incredibly lazy "journalism" is a huge pet peeve of mine.
