This is a particularly insane series of events, but it seems like Trump probably knows this is one of the last bills he'll have any control over and it's essential for Congress to pass, so he's trying to force them to include a completely unrelated repeal of CDA 230, even though it makes absolutely no sense to be in there.

The chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee says they're planning to go ahead anyway without including anything, so it's possible they'll look to just override his veto (which I think requires a 2/3 vote).

If you're not familiar with CDA 230, this is a good explainer.

I know CDA 230 is a political pinata at the moment, but I am cautiously optimistic that the Senate isn't ready to repeal without a replacement, and will feel free to override the veto of a lame duck president.

He doesn't have any real control over it. The bill has enough support in congress that they will likely override his veto.

Trump followed through and vetoed the bill today, so now both houses of congress will need to override the veto if they want it to pass (and they definitely do, it passes every year).

I'm really starting to wonder about the political effects. Trump is really starting to form a wedge between him and the GOP. The bill will no doubt once again pass with the same, veto-proof margins, but now Republicans get the optics of overriding the veto of their president.

If he vetos the stimulus bill, again that is definitely a wtf moment politically. Now McConnell, who only went to compromise in support of Loeffler and Purdue, is being pressed to increase the stimulus amount by... his own party's sitting president. The heck? That bill can also pass through his veto but it's all bad optics for Republicans when Trump still has as much sway on his hardcore base as he does.
