Twitter is asking for the public's opinion on whether public leaders should have their accounts treated similarly to "normal" users. They never explicitly say what they're talking about, but I think it's safe to assume it ranges from the hate speech posted by people like Trump to calls of "Death to America" from the leaders of Iran. They'll be posting a poll in the next few days. It's not clear whether the poll will allow anyone to respond or if it will only accept input from users with a Twitter account (and if so, how they'll handle people responding from multiple accounts). From the post:

Politicians and government officials are constantly evolving how they use our service, and we want our policies to remain relevant to the ever-changing nature of political discourse on Twitter and protect the health of the public conversation. That’s why we’re reviewing our approach to world leaders and seeking your input.

Generally, we want to hear from the public on whether or not they believe world leaders should be subject to the same rules as others on Twitter. And, should a world leader violate a rule, what type of enforcement action is appropriate.

This feels fine to me. No one approach will satisfy everyone, but Twitter receives so much criticism for this currently that we can't fault them for seeking input on the matter.

I don't think this will satisfy anyone who is currently upset unless the userbase votes to give world leaders special treatment. The people currently upset about the account suspensions/bans aren't mad because said leaders weren't given special treatment; they are mad because they don't think anyone should be banned for spreading hate speech or blatant misinformation in the first place.

This is clearly something they need to address. I hate to side with all the Trump supporters who called bullshit on him getting removed but it’s true. So many high profile people are even worse...

Frankly I don’t believe in this “town square” mentality people have taken with Twitter. It’s a private social media platform, not some sort of governing global body for free speech communication where people can say whatever they want as long as there’s some nebulous consensus on them being important enough. Enforce the rules, enforce them for everyone.

Governments around the world have various means of official communication. Twitter ain’t it.

Pardon my statism, but what the World Wide Web and other digital media sorely need now might found along the lines of :

    − laws and regulations

− a digital public service in fighting shape, including at UN level

− continuing education of all citizens on all things digital

and ultimately upending its economic model, weaning Big Tech off the advertizing cornucopia, reinstating us lusers as actual users and paying customers instead of our current status as captive and passive eyeballs, de-humanized behavioural livestock.

Incidently, the advertising industry absorbing 2.5 % of our GDP is way too much and is in fact a taxation without representation : this must stop.
