I thought Covid would be Joe's redemption arc. He went from having Michael Osterholm (American epidemiologist, Regents Professor, and Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota) on the show in March 2020 discussing Covid. To being half a step from outright covid denier and from what i hear he just cant shut up giving his opinions on it. It's very hypocritical for a guy who injecting all sorts of stuff off label to be sceptical about these vaccines.

Are they that eager to protect their $100,000,000 investment? Because even Twitch have the balls to permanently ban a streamer that they're paying eight figures to like Dr Disrespect without warning or reason.

To be fair, there likely was a reason, Twitch/Amazon just didn't make the reason public, other than saying he had violated their community guidelines. But if I had to put money on why, I would probably bet on (ironically enough given this latest JRE controversy) him having openly spread COVID conspiracy theories on their platform the month before he was banned.... or at least that being the straw that broke the camel's back.

My initial presumption when the news broke out was sexual harassment allegations, but this was because his ban occurred while a whole #MeToo movement was going on in gaming, which embroiled a major WoW raiding guild (Method), multiple Twitch streamers and even most of the Super Smash Bros competitive scene. But then nothing actually came out and it turned out that people like Slasher who speculated that Dr Disrespect was done were full of crap.

If I had to make a slightly educated guess as to why they banned Dr Disrespect, it's that Mixer shut down shortly before and Twitch staff realised that they no longer needed to pay their biggest star eight figures to not defect. They probably saw how much they were paying him as a massive liability and sought to find an excuse to permanently ban him. Of course the COVID conspiracy theories he was peddling and the incident where he streamed himself in a restroom was the evidence they needed.

I don't think it was a publicity stunt to raise Guy Beahm's image. Nor do I think that he got approached by Google or Spotify to create a rival streaming network. I think they genuinely told him one that he was permanently banned for breaching community guidelines, never told him specifically why (To be fair, it took YandereDev about two years to find out why Twitch had placed his game on a banned games list so I totally believe that their customer support and communication with streamers is that shitty), and then he started streaming on YouTube after he approached them and asked for a partnership deal.

Joe, take $5m of that $100m and set up your own video host. Then you can say what you like, offer Alex Jones a spot, make money from legions of other podcasters globally who are sick of tiptoeing around everyone, and extend a fat middle finger to the press and the government. I'm sure Rackspace has a datacenter in or near Austin, and I like your odds in Texas with this Supreme Court on free speech issues.

I suppose you'll have to find some way to wiggle out of that Spotify contract first, though. Good luck with that. I mean, you could call covid a hoax every single day and they'll still keep you on until the end, if only to avoid having you as competition...

Terrible excuse. He positions himself as an expert on health-related (albeit non-medical related) issues, so he has a responsibility to be careful in what he decides to say.

"I'm not a doctor, I'm a f***-ing moron," he said. "I'm not a respected source of information, even for me ... But I at least try to be honest about what I'm saying."

I would be much more willing to give Rogan the benefit of the doubt here if he had not used literally this exact same excuse before.

Joe Rogan used to actually believe the moon landings were faked. He went so far as debating Phil Plait about it on Penn Jillette's short-lived radio show / proto-podcast.

Slate articles by Plait from 2007 about it: 1 2 3

The links to the podcast itself are now dead, but looks like someone mirrored them on Youtube. All 10 segments are there, but only 5 in the playlist, which is in the wrong order. I might try to clean this up and edit it down into a single coherent file, because I'd like to re-listen to it.

All of this is just backstory. From 2017: Joe Rogan on why he changed his stance on the Moon landing conspiracy. This is on the official "JRE Clips" Youtube channel, so this is the message Rogan wants to spread about the reason he changed his mind. For comparison, here's the "Joe Rogan Clarifies His Vaccine Comments" from the same channel.

And...it's pretty much the exact same shit.

Clear sign that you're not really walking back a statement is that you're repeating your misinformation as "all I said was..."

"I'm not an anti-vaxx person," he clarified. "I said I believe they're safe and I encourage many people to take them. My parents were vaccinated. I just said that if you're a young, healthy person that you don't need it."

Meanwhile, at 1:50 in his moon landing "clarification" video, he starts talking about how some of the pictures released by the space program were faked or doctored. As he goes on...he starts talking about how it's plausible that more things were doctored, like maybe the real photos got ruined by radiation and so they released fake ones.

5:50: "I know that some film has been damaged...or maybe it's an urban myth?"

He's a bullshit artist, plain and simple. Capable of saying something is true, with 100% confidence is his voice, and then being like "oh, maybe that's not" a second later.

If you want the tl;dw of the video, at 8:30, "I don't think that I know whether or not we went to the moon"...he changed his mind from "it was definitely faked" to "maybe it happened, maybe it didn't, maybe we'll never know".

Someone with as large a platform as his has an obligation to not spread misinformation like this.

I'm not sure the last time I've seen a headline call someone dodging a question as 'standing behind them' and I applaud this use of language. By refusing to address a serious concern you are in fact allowing it to perpetuate and a part of the problem and it should be highlighted with the appropriate language to call this out.

Well okay, but it’s still another clickbait headline in the sea. I’ve occasionally indulged in exaggerated headlines myself but I think it’s a bad habit. If everyone does this, you won’t be able to tell stories about people dodging questions from stories about people answering questions by saying something newsworthy, so headlines become a little less useful.

Rogan spread misinformation - he said that he will tell young people who are healthy to not get the vaccine. This is dangerous misinformation, and maybe no better highlighted than by you yourself opting to not get the vaccine, which is dangerous and ill informed. People under 30 are one of the primary vectors of spread for the virus, and while someone under 30 has a reduced risk, by opting to not get vaccinated, they are putting people other than themselves at increased risk. Add to that the fact that "reduced risk" isn't "no risk", and you have the reason that so many people are angry about antivaxxers.

Your response was great, and reflected well on the community here. It's unfortunate that it still needed to be said after so many deaths, but this is the world we live in, I suppose.

Like... We used to be pretty good friends but that made me lose a lot of respect for her. While I had been obeying lockdown rules like a good law abiding citizen, she had been throwing parties and disrespecting the rules. It's a surprise she hadn't been caught.

I still remember one time when she regurgitated an argument she saw on Instagram about masks being ineffective because you could still smell farts through fabric.

Sometimes things like this make me think there needs to be curbs on free speech.
