Even more insulting, in the summary, they recommend the Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma, which is incredibly corny and an oversimplification of a big issue. It's also something tailor-made for older parents and grandparents.

I'm someone that's against people being Extremely Online, but this is just meh. We've known about these effects for years, almost a decade even.

Who is “we” though? Generally, by the time something gets broad acceptance into being a mainstream view, people who knew about it and had been banging the drum for years are going to hear a lot of extremely reductive, repetitive versions of the narrative before it even begins to crack the mainstream.

Like “we’ve” known about climate change for decades now. The deleterious effects of the war on drugs too. And yet. . .

I can safely say that I have no other social media besides Tildes, which I don’t think is even on the same level as the other contenders. I do still lurk on YouTube but I do not log in under any real accounts. I do have a dummy account to watch age restricted content. It’s really a personal decision for me but I agree that the damage this stuff has and will do is very real. I spent a lot of time on Reddit between 2012-2019 and nothing really came out of it for me expect memes and negative feelings. I tried using Ello for a while and realized it was best for creative types, which I am not. In some ways I feel like Tildes leans towards programmers and those who have heavy computer backgrounds.

On the flip side there has been a lot of good to come out of these platforms so at the end of the day I am conflicted. This isn’t the first time humans have taken something meant to be good and turned it for malicious reasons, it’s kinda what we do.

I think it depends on what communities you visit, for me just searching for stuff on google and adding "reddit" to see what people say about it can be pretty useful, but i agree it can seem hateful and tends to have "hivemind" like feel (i can write a comment that have a thousand upvotes, but it could still be hidded and flagged as "bad" because 1100 people downvoted it).

Trend lines don’t seem to be changing either TBH. If anything there’s a high attrition rate of people either outside the IT field or not invested in engaging in “culture war” discourse.

See if you can read through the entire "why" section without having to take a break to check your social media.

The website design layout is atrocious. Love the messaging but make it easier to read, please.

Eh. It's not really good but definitely not atrocious, at the top it has a summary, then a longer path which has "levels" to read through, etc., then info on contributing, then a site map....

However, the site's layout IMO has a very "click around and find out" feeling, alongside often having like sending you to pages with more links before you can actually read stuff, which feels like something whoever made this borrowed from the internet of a quarter lifetime ago.
