Default sorting for topic lists changed to "activity"

Tags: changelog

As discussed yesterday, since everyone seemed supportive, I've updated the default sorting for topic lists to "activity". I think we'll probably need to reconsider this as the site's traffic and posting volume continues increasing, but I think it's working really well as a default for now.

Hopefully the default will also be customizable on a per-group basis in the future (and/or allow people to set up their own "shortcuts" to certain groups with specific sortings).

Thank you so much for this. Here's hoping for the customization in the future, but I think this is just fine now.

A welcome change. Is there a possibility for a "activity" comment sort?

I mean, it's probably possible, but I'm not sure exactly how it would work. Would a top-level comment move to the top whenever there's a reply anywhere "underneath" it?

I would say anywhere under it yeah.

I preferred recent as default. Making the activity tab default makes old posts rise to the top rather than opening users up to content as it's being posted.

We have talked about this a bit and my suggestion was to reserve 4 slots at the top for new posts to give them some more exposure time and then have the mix take over under that. As volume increases I will be bringing this idea up again since I think you're right that the new submissions are likely to get rapidly buried under a mountain of new comment bumps.
