Suggestion: Add "self post" tag to all posts that are self posts
Or is there another way that I don't know of? It's weird that this isn't the case already. Make it easier to browse Tildes-native contents especially for new users.
It looks like your request has been accepted by the God of topic tagging. ;) So I'll try to remember to do the same from now on.
I thought it was a cute idea! And I'd never even thought of it as a gap in our tagging language. Until now...
I love when tags have a history. Like Deimos being the father of
personal histories
, Algernon the birther orwindsor royals
and Kuromantisshort read
.The rather flexible ask tag seemed to mostly cover it, but not everything gets tagged with ask nor is it appropriate as it's not always an ask
Yeah, it was those edge case topics that got me intrigued by the idea of the
self post
tag. Especially considering there's a few more users these days posting topics like awards prediction threads or pop-up events to name a few...How much time per day would you say you spend tagging? I honestly struggle sometimes to think of tags, guiltily knowing I am making more work for you! Much appreciated.
I'm sat at my desktop in my home office for the bulk of any given day. I find the tagging mysteriously therapeutic, so dip in pretty often, if I'm honest.
No need to feel guilty though; Tildes is very much a collaborative space where we all bring our own talents. Some of us are great at finding quality content, others have a way with words, and some of us love a good tag! 😊
Wait, am I the father of Short read? The tag seems to be older than my account, starting here.
the mods also went back and retagged old posts too, maybe that's why
Yup, and IIRC after 30 days the topic log gets wiped, which is why the edit doesn't show up anymore.
Both a boon and a curse of a feature! History being lost while simultaneously expunging the records of how the sausage is made.
A conversation that has been lost to the sands of time involved the implementation of the
short read
tag in some meta chit chat.Could have sworn it was a conversation you were involved with, and how my memory has it remembered. But after a thorough, and rather stalkerish cursory scan of your comment history involving Ctrl-F, I can neither confirm or deny this.
It has now turned from a fact to a legend. Congrats, I think.
Looking at my *post* history, maybe this is the thread you're remembering about me doing meta discussion of the tag? That being said, this thread never implies I came up with the idea of the short read tag.
Speaking of history, I recall our initial discussions about tags, just after you joined Tildes, where I explained to you that topics on Tildes not only could have more than two tags, but usually should have more than two tags. I think I created a monster! :P
I remember it taking me so long to wrap my head around tags, and the potential that a submission could be moved around by someone else. 😂 I think that's why I empathise a lot with this latest batch of new Tilders!
My prayer has been heard! Thanks @mycketforvirrad
No worries.
Instead of saying 'article' or 'link' or 'video' or something like that, self posts say 'text' or 'Ask (survey)' and so on, but it requires a second look to see. Self posts also include the beginning of the text in italic and grey, which is another indicator.
Is that enough? Who knows, probably up to everyone individually :) But a small browser plugin could color-tag the 'topic content type' (which is what it's called in the HTML) depending on what it is (text, article, ask, video, etc.).
There are more variety of self posts than ask and the "text" tag seems to refer to something else already. For example, people used to write poetry or financial analysis here, who knows what else is out there!
Edit: also browser plugin for something so small seems not very user friendly
Edit 2:
Yeah, but self posts are much rarer than link posts and so they're still hard to find even when you know what to look for. Tags help make niche things easier to find, just a blanket application on any posts that are not link posts or automatic posts will be fine enough.
I didn't mean the tag, but there's a small text under the title saying text. Seems like all self posts have that. But it would indeed be useful if you could search/filter for those topic content types!
That's true! And also probably more effort than it is worth, but it would fix the problem. I don't know how RES started :) But a user script for Greasemonkey/Tampermonkey would probably also work and be much shorter and simpler.
Edit: I just did this small script that gives every "text" post a bright green background for the content type. Not pretty but quick and dirty and gets the job done, feel free to use it:
Ah gotcha, my bad. Yeah seems that search doesn't work on these "meta texts", I tried searching 'scheduled topic' and it didn't work either
It's wild to me how you guys can come up with scripts that easily
