I tried with everything opening in a new tab and it was become quite fast a shitload of tabs opening everywhere.
I could rework it to open anything external to tildes in a new tab I suppose but as some other user pointed out, you just need to middle-click a link (but as a notebook user, I get the point).
Edit: I think I'll do just that. Everything that is not a link to "tildes.net" open in new tab seems quite natural in terms of UX.
It should be an option in settings. I would prefer to have them open in a new tab as well.

Edit2: updated with the new behaviour
I agree - on desktop it'd be great for them to open in a new tab on desktop. On mobile, I think it'd make the UX much more clunky.
I’ve been thinking about this too. I’d prefer links to open up in a new tab.
I would like this as well, one of the only features missing that I've thought would really enhance the experience so far.
I just use middle-click to open a link in a new tab. I don't think this should be set as as site-wide preference.
