Three Cheers for Tildes: App updates and feedback (November 2024) — Version 1.2 lets you save comment drafts

This topic is for the Three Cheers for Tildes mobile app.

I'll summarize the major updates at the start of each similar topic, so people can read the updates and then hit Ignore if they don't care about more frequent updates and user feedback.

Recently:

Version 1.2.2 (Dec 5, 2024):

  • Added advanced settings to auto-vote on topics when opening them
  • Added advanced setting to hide "Reply" from text long-press menu
  • Fixed inserting markdown links with parentheses
  • Fixed UI bugs in profiles
  • Fixed crashes opening certain topics

Happy Thanksgiving! Three Cheers version 1.2 is out for Android and iOS! (Nov 27, 2024)

  • Save drafts of comment replies, edits, and private message replies
  • Manage drafts via Settings
  • Improved some error messages

Does not yet support saving drafts of new submissions

I know some of you were hoping for topic submission drafts, but I wanted to release what I've implemented so far with comment drafts. This version took a decent amount of time to develop, and I didn't want to delay it further by adding submission drafts in this release. Thanks for your patience!

Google was a one-time lifetime $25 fee if I remember correctly. Apple is $99 per year.

Thanks for the sentiment! It's kind of a passion project in that I'll never make a proper wage from it; there aren't enough Tildes users for that. I do accept donations, as others pointed out.

Awesome! I'd like to note that being able to scan through the comment thread while typing a response is helpful as I often need to reference somebody's post when responding.

Good point. It sounds like it's slightly easier now to go back and forth with a saved draft and viewing other comments, but maybe it would be even better with scrollable comments while the bottom sheet is open. It's trickier than it sounds though, since there are a lot of small interactions that would have to be disabled if a reply panel is currently open. So not conclusive at this point.

Would a comment reference table be easier to implement? Like before replying you could go around and save comments you might want to pull up while writing your reply.

I’ve been wondering something for a while now, so I’ll just ask. I often want to copy something from someone’s comment. I select the text and then always end up hitting the ‘reply’ button because muscle memory is expecting ‘copy’ to be the first option. I think the ‘reply’ option is awesome, but I use ‘copy’ more often, so I end up undoing stuff pretty often. Am I just a slow learner or is this something more people are running into? Please don’t say “both can be true at the same time” 😅

Because of all the discussion, one thing that may not have become clear is that, for me, it’s just a matter of order in which the “reply” button appears in the menu. I really like the “reply” option! Copy then Reply, seems more natural to me.

Okay, thanks for clarifying. I uploaded another build, version 1.2.3, that moves the Reply option to the end, instead of removing it entirely.

To head off potential followups: I won't be going more fine-grained than that, interspersing it into the middle of any default system menu options. The system menu options can easily change between iOS updates, and I don't want to deal with that.

(Android users: On Android the advanced setting is still to remove Reply entirely. It's not straightforward to customize the ordering on Android AFAIK.)

I think that's down to your OS, because I'm on Android and I don't see the "reply" option on the long-press menu in Three Cheers.

I think that's your problem though. The issue is iOS, not Three Cheers. I'm not sure there's much talklittle can do about it.

I think I might understand why you’re responding this way. You might be thinking this ‘reply’ option is coming from the OS. I’m pretty sure it’s added in the app, added by talklittle. The order can be altered, at least in Swift that seems to be the case.

Yours was a completely fair reading. I phrased it very poorly for text. I really should know better by now not to lean too heavily on idiomatic expressions without properly formatting the text for emphasis. It's good to be reminded.

Incidentally, it always tickles me to see a non-native speaker apologize in textbook English for some supposed fault in understanding. I imagine people reading classics and getting a complex because they can't seem to get their English up to the standards of like Lord Byron or something.

"I implore you excuse my rough English, for I am late-come to the tongue of fair Albion's shores..."

I wonder how common it is for non-native speakers to actually have a better grasp of English composition than the majority of native speakers, but not know it for whatever reason.

But back on topic, you are correct that that option is added by me. I've noted the muscle memory issue, but for now I'm not making plans to change it or add an option, sorry to say. I have regretted adding too many options in previous apps. If it's a widespread problem then I might reconsider down the line.

Other times I wanted to make a very higher quality post, look things up, write down notes as I went, and I had to do it in a text editor.
