Three Cheers for Tildes: App updates and feedback (November 2024) — Version 1.2 lets you save comment drafts
This topic is for the Three Cheers for Tildes mobile app.
I'll summarize the major updates at the start of each similar topic, so people can read the updates and then hit Ignore if they don't care about more frequent updates and user feedback.
Recently:
Version 1.2.2 (Dec 5, 2024):
- Added advanced settings to auto-vote on topics when opening them
- Added advanced setting to hide "Reply" from text long-press menu
- Fixed inserting markdown links with parentheses
- Fixed UI bugs in profiles
- Fixed crashes opening certain topics
Happy Thanksgiving! Three Cheers version 1.2 is out for Android and iOS! (Nov 27, 2024)
- Save drafts of comment replies, edits, and private message replies
- Manage drafts via Settings
- Improved some error messages
Does not yet support saving drafts of new submissions
I know some of you were hoping for topic submission drafts, but I wanted to release what I've implemented so far with comment drafts. This version took a decent amount of time to develop, and I didn't want to delay it further by adding submission drafts in this release. Thanks for your patience!

Drafts?! My notes app is going to wonder where I went.
Remember that if you want to give three cheers to talklittle, who is developing this backbone of our community entirely for free, you can donate in the app!
BLACK FRIDAY SPECIAL: If you donate this week, you’ll have less money to drop on all those tempting sales for things you don’t actually need, saving you from frivolous spending and additional clutter. Win-win!
What a deal! No need to think about it, I would take that in a heartbeat!
Woo drafts! Thank you!
Glad you like the drafts!
Happy Thanksgiving to you as well! Appreciate the continued efforts. Hip hip!
I am very thankful for you and this update!
Happy thanksgiving! 🦃
this year I'm thankful for talklittle's update :D
By the way does it cost you money to post them on Google and apple store?
Google was a one-time lifetime $25 fee if I remember correctly. Apple is $99 per year.
Is this a passion project for you? Because all I'm thinking is like take my money! Or at least let me buy you a coffee or something
Thanks for the sentiment! It's kind of a passion project in that I'll never make a proper wage from it; there aren't enough Tildes users for that. I do accept donations, as others pointed out.
The iOS version has a donate option under settings.
The Android version does as well.
Really happy we can now save drafts! Thanks for all the work you've put into this app, it's made engaging on Tildes really smooth. I was a RiF user for over a decade and you just keep hitting it out of the park for me.
Thanks for your kind words!
Awesome! I'd like to note that being able to scan through the comment thread while typing a response is helpful as I often need to reference somebody's post when responding.
Good point. It sounds like it's slightly easier now to go back and forth with a saved draft and viewing other comments, but maybe it would be even better with scrollable comments while the bottom sheet is open. It's trickier than it sounds though, since there are a lot of small interactions that would have to be disabled if a reply panel is currently open. So not conclusive at this point.
Whatever the case, a standalone app for a community this size is an achievement in itself. I'll celebrate that 🥳
Would a comment reference table be easier to implement? Like before replying you could go around and save comments you might want to pull up while writing your reply.
Three Cheers version 1.2.2 is out! (Dec 5, 2024)
You are the BEST!
Also, where is it? Advanced settings doesn't work for me and then app stops responding on the 2nd attempt. Pixel 9 pro fold.
Oh shoot, thanks for letting me know. The release build had a configuration error causing that crash. I've uploaded version 1.2.3 that fixes the Advanced settings on Android.
Great to see more features, thanks for all the effort!
I’ve been wondering something for a while now, so I’ll just ask. I often want to copy something from someone’s comment. I select the text and then always end up hitting the ‘reply’ button because muscle memory is expecting ‘copy’ to be the first option. I think the ‘reply’ option is awesome, but I use ‘copy’ more often, so I end up undoing stuff pretty often. Am I just a slow learner or is this something more people are running into? Please don’t say “both can be true at the same time” 😅
I'm happy to report that I changed my mind, and added a setting to hide the "Reply" option in the long-press menu. It's under a new "Advanced settings" screen in version 1.2.2, which is going into TestFlight now.
That’s really cool.
Because of all the discussion, one thing that may not have become clear is that, for me, it’s just a matter of order in which the “reply” button appears in the menu. I really like the “reply” option! Copy then Reply, seems more natural to me.
Okay, thanks for clarifying. I uploaded another build, version 1.2.3, that moves the Reply option to the end, instead of removing it entirely.
To head off potential followups: I won't be going more fine-grained than that, interspersing it into the middle of any default system menu options. The system menu options can easily change between iOS updates, and I don't want to deal with that.
(Android users: On Android the advanced setting is still to remove Reply entirely. It's not straightforward to customize the ordering on Android AFAIK.)
Awesome, you rock!
I think that's down to your OS, because I'm on Android and I don't see the "reply" option on the long-press menu in Three Cheers.
If I select text on Android, it pops up without a long press, offering Reply then Copy.

I should’ve added it’s like that on iOS.
I think that's your problem though. The issue is iOS, not Three Cheers. I'm not sure there's much talklittle can do about it.
Let’s try to keep the positive Tildes vibe going.
I think I might understand why you’re responding this way. You might be thinking this ‘reply’ option is coming from the OS. I’m pretty sure it’s added in the app, added by talklittle. The order can be altered, at least in Swift that seems to be the case.
Sorry, I phrased that poorly for text. Think of it more like "that's your problem," rather than, "that's your problem."
Thanks for the clarification, much appreciated! I’m not a native speaker, so I might have interpreted too literally.
Yours was a completely fair reading. I phrased it very poorly for text. I really should know better by now not to lean too heavily on idiomatic expressions without properly formatting the text for emphasis. It's good to be reminded.
Incidentally, it always tickles me to see a non-native speaker apologize in textbook English for some supposed fault in understanding. I imagine people reading classics and getting a complex because they can't seem to get their English up to the standards of like Lord Byron or something.
"I implore you excuse my rough English, for I am late-come to the tongue of fair Albion's shores..."
I wonder how common it is for non-native speakers to actually have a better grasp of English composition than the majority of native speakers, but not know it for whatever reason.
It's not just iOS, it's Android too.
This is quickly becoming the most confusing exchange I’ve had on Tildes.
My apologies!
What struck you as negative about that comment?
To me, "that's your problem though" sounds passive aggressive. It's unhelpful and uncompassionate. A nicer response could have been "There might not be a way to change that". This removes the pointing finger.
FWIW I don't think that's intended to be read as "that's your problem" but rather "that's the problem." In the tone of someone trying to help troubleshoot. Like a plumber uncovering a leaky pipe and saying, "yeah, that's your problem right there."
But back on topic, you are correct that that option is added by me. I've noted the muscle memory issue, but for now I'm not making plans to change it or add an option, sorry to say. I have regretted adding too many options in previous apps. If it's a widespread problem then I might reconsider down the line.
That was the whole point of my initial post: to gauge how much of an issue this is for other people.
I'm a bit surprised the "Reply" option isn't showing up. But not that surprised because I'm sure that menu works differently on different manufacturers. Always feature fragmentation on Android. If you like, feel free to message me your device info and I can research if that's a known issue with a workaround.
No worries, my friend. It's working fine for my purposes. Thank you for all your work, and especially for the comment draft feature. That was one of my most used features on rif.
A nice feature. More than a few times I was thinking through a comment on another social medium platform, pressed a wrong button/tab/link and lost what I wrote. Other times I wanted to make a very higher quality post, look things up, write down notes as I went, and I had to do it in a text editor.
