    ~video
    ~movies~video.movies or ~video.film
    ~tv~video.tv

Perhaps ~video.web for YouTube etc, unsure if it would be necessary to split it from ~video.

I would consider that stuff to be tangentially related content that could be in a lower hierarchy. Maybe some sort of ~video.tv.industry_news.

I feel like any content belonging to a subgroup should be appropriate in its parent as well, even if broadly. Most content that would belong to a group like ~video.tv.industry_news would not belong to ~video. just look at ~tildes , everything in ~tildes.official definitely belongs in ~tildes . If ~anime was a subgroup of ~tv (which I think it should), everything in ~tv.anime would be appropriate in ~tv as well if ~anime didn't exist

When I said web videos I meant random videos you might find on YouTube, not web series. Those wouldn't fit in ~movies or ~series.

Series might be a little too broad. Could include books which might not be expected.

Anime is a culture as much as a medium so that culture and fandom aspect is why anime having it's own area makes a kinda sense.

Yeah, forcing things together because the medium is similar in form is awkward at best. In reality (at least for English speakers), anime and visual novels or something are much closer when looking at what people interact with and group together than anime and other forms of video.

Like, there's a reason most anime sites also cover manga and such. They're naturally grouped together in how we consume and discuss them, and you can't keep them together and have them as a sub-group of something else without making a big mess.

Is that how any sizable portion of people engages with video content, though? Do you ever go "I want to know about what's going on with video content" and get a #metoo article, the newest jacksfilms video, a clip from a tv show that just started airing, and a historical video lecture on Justinian?

Of course you could just say "go lower in the hierarchy," but it still calls into question the purpose of the top level if the content is completely mismatched because they're all similar in form.

I almost wonder if it'd be too far to just have ~media and have it split up from there to ~media.video and ~media.music.

A lot of good comments for this already but I'll present another opinion for why to keep them separate: most services for watching TV shows and Movies separate them. Even Netflix is switching to split TV shows from movies in their interface. How you watch, or consume, them is different so discussion around them will be different - different audience types really.

Yeah, the "death" of ~movies is incredibly unlikely given the popularity of the subject... at worst it languishes a while until the user base picks up enough to populate it with content more consistently.

As for why IMO they shouldn't be merged, it's very likely that ~movies will eventually have lots of its own subgroups and those will have subgroups of their own eventually as well (e.g. ~movies.marvel.avengers), as will ~tv, and so by combining them you may solve a temporary problem with activity but you will just make it harder to separate them later when they need to be for discoverability and convenient navigation.

As to your 2nd and 3rd points... when I designed the original prototype of the hierarchy for @deimos I actually combined all video based media into one group called ~vid and then had the subgroups organized by platform (netflix, youtube, etc) rather than media type (tv, movies, anime, web series, etc). However even that method of categorization is problematic since many are cross-platform, and so ultimately I think media type is still the best way to categorize them since, while there is some crossover, at least it's an intuitive and easily understandable distinction to people.

And IIRC the reason for ~anime just being ~anime was because it's unlikely for someone to like anime movies and not anime tv shows?

Yeah, that was the reasoning AFAIR too. Anime may come in many forms but I think it's pretty unlikely that anime series fans don't also watch anime films as well, and anime is also much less distinct than most other movies and tv shows since many anime series also have accompanying films. However manga is a bit different and distinct enough it would probably be better placed under ~books IMO.

Having watched the growth of anime in the US from late 80s to today (I helped title and duplicate some of those Fist of the North Star VHS tapes at one point) - it's a culture - protoculture?! - that is probably best to designate it's own area and pretty much everyone in or out of the culture usually agree.

I suspect it's not nearly popular enough to justify having it's own top level group. I could be wrong though and if that turns out to be the case, unlike disentangling a merger, simply moving a subgroup like ~books.manga to it's own top-level group at some later date is trivial.

I personally think they should stay separate, the site is young now with more population they will want to be separate.
