Site Idea: Gather links from multiple sources on the same topics and put them together

This all started about 5 minutes ago because I added a link to the EFF story on the post of the Gizmodo article submission about Facebook sharing phone numbers used for 2FA with advertisers, but the more I thought about it in the past 5 minutes since that comment I think it could be more.

There's more information out there and available than ever before. The barrier for for entry on content creation is lower than ever. However this has led to the easy-spread of misinformation. It's not that the right info isn't out there, it's that finding it is harder now.

The idea is to have a site that is essentially a link aggregator. But what makes it different is that if you find a site that talks about the same thing you can tack on the article to the post. Ergo making posts about events, not articles. Bringing sources together and making cross referencing easy.

    And from my comment there:

    Deimos briefly mentioned something like this in a recent topic:

    Ideally, I'd like to have a sort of "related links" feature where we could add additional links to the same post without needing separate ones for slightly different treatments of the same story.

    And I don't know if there is a Gitlab issue on the idea it yet... but I will add one on the morning if there isn't.

      We talked about extending this to megathreads as well. Letting people submit more links to the same thread/topic, and giving mods a 'merge' feature so when multiples get posted they can all be consolidated, instead of picking a winner and removing the rest. Lots of interesting possibilities open up if you can let people submit more links to an existing topic.

      Fun thought experiment - what if you let people vote on those links to change their order? Would the best articles rise up to the top of the link list, I wonder? Can we facilitate that somehow?

    This seems like a good idea, although I have some concerns. When a good article is posted this isn't really a problem and it's nice that everyone can have a discussion with a common base of knowledge. I also think other articles can be brought up in discussions organically and it creates a thread of discussion people can follow and maintain a complete base of knowledge. So I wonder if adding more articles might fragment that constituent base of knowledge. Though this could be fixed with a good citation system.

    The second concern is if people will even read alternative articles. Personally I've found it requires some effort on my part to actually look at an article instead of reading the comments first. If there were even more articles available It could be even harder. This is a hard problem to solve, I've sometimes hoped for a feature that hides titles and just shows URLs, author, and what not. That way I can't even get an idea of what an article is without clicking through at which point you'll probably read it.

      On your second concern,

      .topic-title a {
          visibility: hidden;
      }
      .topic-title a::before {
          content: attr(href);
          visibility: visible;
      }

        Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I hope this site someday exists (:
