Would there be any want or need for a Tildes Discord Server?
As the title says, I'm wondering if there is any want or need for a Tildes Discord server. I have a few ideas on how it might work, and how to make it a better for discussion than the usual Discord server.
My personal reason for wanting a Tildes Discord server is that right now, Tildes is a slow site. Posts are made once every hour or so, and while I'd much rather have the hourly high-effort and interesting posts than low-quality posts, a Discord server would be able to facilitate more direct and speedy discussion. The problem is that a Discord server is inherently geared towards more low-quality discussion already, so a pretty extensive system might have to be put into place to make it work.
However, I don't want to go through the process of creating only to find out that no one is interested. If there is significant interest, I'll do a write-up of the ideas I have and add them onto this post.
Slightly unrelated, but I'm still getting adjusted to the tag system. If I've done anything wrong there, please let me know.
Edit: Many helpful users have pointed out and shown many problems with the idea, as well as Deimos' stance on them. Right now it just seems to not be worth it, but I'll keep the idea on the backburner for the future perhaps.
I don't think a Discord is needed. If you want more discussion on the site, then respond to other comments.
I think if you create a Discord channel then there will be even less activity on the site.
That's a good point that I hadn't thought of, thanks for pointing it out. It seems like I thought I had a million dollar idea that ended up not being worth much, as I often do. Again, thanks for the criticism of the idea.
This is the same flaw in Reddit's chat room feature. A huge amount of value is in the existing threads, which is completely lost in a chat room. For example, I frequently (or used to anyways) search for Reddit threads discussing particular aspects of Dota.
Thanks, the official stance from Deimos is useful. He brings up a lot of probable problems with the Discord server as well. I would like to think I could figure something out to curb said problems, but it would take a lot of time and effort and may not be worth it. Like Eabyrt said above, a Discord server might very well take activity away from Tildes itself, which isn't what I want at all.
I believe there are already a few Tildes rooms on various chat clients
I was unaware there even was a Tildes wiki! And yes, it seems like there already is a Discord server listed there. I suppose someone beat me to the punch.
Thanks for the clarification! I think I'll keep these bookmarked for future use.
Are any of them active?
The discord server @Kat made is fairly active
Wait a second here. For once here @Kat wasn't the one to do it. It was me (:
Oh woops, had no idea!
If there was to be a tildes chat room, I'd prefer an open protocol like matrix.
Dang, I wish I was compensated to shill Discord servers! /s
More seriously, I doubt Discord is directly or indirectly paying people to start and advertise Discord servers. I suspect it's just regular people, who happen to want to have their own personal
fiefdomserver. In all honesty, I don't blame them. It would be nice to own a large Discord server. But I digress. One way or the other, thanks for the input.
I think @what said it best in the last thread:
Disagreed. From experience, a Discord would sap activity from the main forum (whether Tildes or Reddit) and move it to Discord, where only a minority of users can view.
What is the benefit of a Discord over ~talk?
My biggest issue with a tildes discord server is that tildes is very strongly privacy conscious, anti adverting, and anti tracking, while discord is distinctly not. It just doesn't make sense to pair those two services together.
I created one that's pretty active. Here's the link if you're interested.
Edit: I could also mod you if you want to make some productive changes.
