Favicons sometimes aren't displayed to the left of link posts

I found an old post about this here. On the other hand, this still seems to be an unresolved issue. Instead of the external site's favicon appearing, there's either I dotted line around a square or there's nothing at all.

Have there been other Tildes developers that have tried to fix this?

Currently, the favicon scraping is dependent on Embedly correctly identifying the site's favicon and returning info about it. The process is something like this:

    1. Someone submits a link topic
    2. The link is passed to Embedly's Extract API
    3. When the response comes back from Embedly's API, it's used by a couple of different processes to get information about the link. One of these pulls information like the word count out of the data, and another one of them uses the favicon_url data to download the favicon for that site.

If there's a favicon missing on Tildes, that usually means that Embedly isn't able to determine the site's favicon for some reason. For example, this post of an article on muckrock.com is missing one. If you try that url on Embedly, the data doesn't have anything under favicon_url for some reason.

This isn't necessarily the way it should work, and we should probably just have a general scraper that's also able to find favicons without Embedly being involved, but it's how it currently works.
