Feature Idea: Tildes Playlist - Would it be useful to have some sort of automated, easy to use, media categorization?

My use case:
I watch videos (YouTube) and listen to audio (Podcasts) as a major part of my weekly media intake. I would love some sort of generated Tildes Playlist . IANADev, but it sure would be nice if Tildes was able to parse, scrape, and categorize media posted as topics and in comments. Then present them to me with a date filter, and allow separating audio only and video media. Maybe something like tildes.net/?tag= but at tildes.net/playlist. I guess it would be nice to be able to sort media by tag as well.

Possible other use case:
Accessibility?

I see that some videos are already being tagged "videos." So there already is some organic interest in this special category, right?

What do you all think, is this useful?

From a dev perspective, is getting that correct enough difficult? Does Embedly categorize audio only and video?

edit: in the playlist view, there should of course be a link back to the topic or comment where the media was found. Also, @Deimos, I certainly don't want to take Tildes away from the text-first/only direction of the site, but sometimes I am doing stuff conducive to audio/video media intake like cooking, driving, etc. It would be cool to be able to easily consume it then, and come back to comment later.

Github is littered with tools for this stuff that already pull from reddit. Best coded one I know of in python is Andreas' auto playlister which can pull from reddit to spotify. Shouldn't be hard to tweak it to pull from Tildes, and it'll save you the work on the spotify end. It's responsible for this ever rotating playlist which is one of listentothis' more popular features.

Roni's old chrome extension that generates youtube playlists with a click from any reddit view can probably give you some ideas as well.

That would sure as shit aid my music discovery process.

And since you mentioned it, the media type topic tags should probably be automatically applied too IMO, so I have created a gitlab issue for that as well: https://gitlab.com/tildes/tildes/issues/601

This probably doesn't answer the question at all, but your post reminded me of an awesome site that was briefly online in 2011 called Listening Room. The idea is that anyone could create a "room" with a URL for sharing with friends. Everyone in a given room could listen to the same audio stream live, and chat about it on the page. The stream was literally a queue of MP3s room visitors uploaded themselves. It was a great space to hang out and discover new tunes collaboratively.

Due to the legal and financial horrors of music licensing in the 21st century, the site didn't last very long. Literally a few days. The MetaFilter thread where I discovered the site is still available to document the site's rise and fall, and captures our mood about it at the time.

I would love if there were a way to revisit the concept today on Tildes. If anything, TPTB on the internet are even less likely to permit it today than they were 9 years ago. Still a nice thought.

I'm not really sure what you mean by making a playlist. Like would this be a playlist on YouTube or Spotify or some other platform that automatically updates and includes recent things that were posted to Tildes?

Or are you thinking more like a player that's hosted on Tildes itself that can just autoplay through the posts?

It's the same general idea as the listentothis charts were. Capture a number of content views, generate wiki pages as charts sorting on various metrics, maybe offload that content to external services like spotify using other tools. You have top music for a given time period sorted by popular, most comments, etc and playlists that will garner large subscriber followings on those other services. It all rolls along at a time delay from the site itself, auto-updating in perpetuity.

You remember reddit.tv I'm sure - same concept there, videos from each community. They never did anything intelligent with it. Embedded players? Eh, no. That's better suited for an extension, though you could expose some sort of generic playlist view for it to use, just raw links, that would take some of the pain out of parsing titles. Tildes is just as suited to create podcasting playlists and book reading lists. This is really about making 'collections' of certain content types that can be packaged up and exported to users or other services.

It's a strange thing to talk about - creating content views of your own content that live on other services. Not the sort of thing that a for-profit company would ever consider, since they have to maximize time on site. Tildes has the luxury of making a very different choice here.

The value of this is a bit hard to see at first - those playlists and other content sets you generate on various services are kinda like the 'best of' tildes content served up easy for consumption separate from the website itself. You get to be the one to define 'best of' on official channels. The kicker is people have to come back here to submit content if they want to put anything into those lists themselves. It'll draw some of the best people back to the communities that generate the content. Leave a plug in the comments of the playlists - a short paragraph is usually all you get, but it's enough.

It may be prudent to register things like a Tildes youtube and a Tildes spotify at some point to give that sort of thing a home.

Get ~music bumping with about as many dedicated folks as are on Tildes in total right now, and it'll generate content that puts other lists to shame, just like some smaller subs still do in their own quiet corners far from the front page.

Maybe we should bring the concept of /r/listentous back for a while. It'd get ~music up past ten posts a day easy. Those elections are just the kind of crazy that fits in around here.

Won’t be me to get it pumping this time sadly. I’ve kinda shifted away from music exploration entirely and mainly listen to audiobooks and podcasts now.

I should add, that what I really want is both audio and video links to be parsed from comments as well as post links to audio/video. The comment part is key for the ~music sidebar use case.

You might be able to use YouTube-dl to scrape a tildes page and save a list of links that way.

I brought forward the idea of having an inlayed player for Podcasts, but it worked out better to just link to the website. For curation, @ThatFanficGuy might be into something with a YouTube/SoundCloud/Spotify Playlist, and if we had a tool that could do that, that would be kinda neat.
