Yesterday I saw a post tagged marijuana and I was considering changing it to cannabis since imho it's a more accurate term, not rooted in racism. So I decided to try and figure out which tag is used more, and go with whatever the consensus seems to be. Turns out they're both used about the same, and many threads are tagged with both.

I seem to recall there being discussion of making synonymous tags, and was agreed it was one of those back burner things since tags aren't actually used enough yet for it to be worth implementing. I for one think there's enough data now in how tags are being used that we should maybe take another look at that.

I always think the problem with a tagging system like this is, while it's quite useful when you're browsing the tags, it's less useful when you search for posts based on the tags because multiple posts on a similar subject that you want to find won't necessarily all share the tag you actually searched by. Example: if someone searches for cannabis, they won't get any posts tagged with marijuana that are not also tagged with cannabis. Even though those are the same thing in 99% of cases! So, linked synonymous tags would be a way to cut down on that, but I'd favour keeping more tags over using less.
