Two bugs: "Keep Me Logged In" doesn't work, and Read Replies still show as "New"

Tags: bug

#Edit: OK, I am terribly unaware of the "Mark as Read" option. Thank you to @Spel for pointing this out. I feel so dumb right now, so please accept my apology for being unaware. I just thought that reading the messages would mark them as read, so please forgive me. :( However, the other thing definitely doesn't work for me.

As the title suggests, no matter whether I come back to the site from desktop or mobile, every single time I have to login in again.. even if I had just been on the site five minutes prior. It's not too much of an inconvenience, but it's not working for me.

I don't know how to post my Chrome details, but I am on Win 10 with the latest Chrome build. As for mobile, I am accessing it from Android 7.0 through the latest Chrome on there.. I've already cleared my cache to see if maybe that would fix it, but sadly it did not.

I hope it doesn't come off as me complaining, but I just wanted to let your team know of the issue I've been having.

And I like having to click "mark as read" to clear a notification/reply, although that's personal preferences in play. I can imagine it becoming an issue if you post a thread that generates 100's of responses.

I'm quite fond of it too but I can't even explain why, since I also like the 'click to read' thing reddit has. Although I bet that can be replicated with the inevitable tildes browser extensions...

Although to be fair, there should be a 'mark all as read'

Yeah, we are having issues with cookies expiring before they should which is logging people out. We’re aware of the issue and it’s on our gitlab issue tracker but it’s really inconsistent, even within the same browser after forcing a new cookie and getting people to manually check the expiry date... so can’t quite figure the issue out yet. We will let everyone know when we do though. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Eventually as the volume of traffic increases we will likely create ~tildes.bugs and/or ~tildes.help though... just to help us manage reports from users better.

I would wager that it's a server-side configuration issue with session expiry. For instance, I work with a PHP framework that will expire sessions at the framework level after a configured time period, but PHP itself has a separate expiration procedure in place, so the two can potentially conflict if not configured correctly. I would look into this as a possibility if you haven't already :)

I’m definitely getting the “keep me logged in” bug on iOS Safari (latest 11.4 beta) and I think also macOS safari.

HttpOnly doesn’t mean only HTTP, it also works under HTTPS. It just means that the cookie is not accessible via client side (JS). It’s useful for security reasons.

By the way, I changed it's value to false by using developer tools. I still don't have any problem about being logged in.

I have been having the 'keep me logged in' bug, but not consistently, even on the same computer/browser.
