Too bad. I guess they saw the success of the game and said, "Hey, enough people just don't care J.K. Rowling is awful. And if we get her back we can splash her name all over the ads!"

Really don't see a sense in making a TV show at the moment. The movie series concluded only a decade ago and is still very much alive in people's minds, plus the recency of the JKR controversy is just going to put a sour taste in everyone's mouth.

Hollywood has felt especially soulless recently, probably a consequence of how much business in general has become financialized, the mouth-watering profits that come with milking IPs dry due to globalization and a rapidly expanding middle class across the developing world, and the effect of streaming on how we watch movies and TV. I think realistically it's going to wind up being forgettable, even if it's a decent show from a bingewatching perspective.

Edit: To be clear I don't really have an opinion about her and it was just my experience when roaming the real world. I think @cloud_loud and @NaraVara explained it better and in more detail further down.

For one thing, Rowling has gone beyond the realm of saying mean things on Twitter. She has actively campaigned against legal protections for Trans people, as well as giving support to anti trans activists with links to far right groups.

Also, this attitude that things which happen online aren't real is a bit strange to me. Social media by design magnifies conflict and controversy, but that doesn't mean that real harm isn't done by it. If someone wrote and published books in which they advocated for racial eugenics and supported Nazis, but didn't say any of those things in person, they're still a Nazi. We wouldn't say, "that's just books, it doesn't matter in the real world".

If you want proof of that the Harry Potter theme parks are still incredibly popular and the game just sold like gangbusters. If you’re not super online JK Rowling as a figure means nothing to you.

It's worth remembering that from anyone's perspective as an individual, several hundred people is a shitload of people to be interacting with on something. When you're in spaces with hundreds or even a few thousand people feeling a certain way about this or that, it can definitely feel like you're involved in some kind of large movement.

But when it comes to a mass media property, that's all basically just a rounding error on the bottom line. These games and movies are anticipating many millions of viewers. Anything less than 10 million units sold on opening week is a failure. Even if your online circles have 200,000 people in your 3-degrees of separation sphere, you're getting a self-selecting perspective of 2% of that user base. It's really hard to grapple with the fact that most people are just not around and not paying attention to these cultural touchstones.

Which is disappointing because what she's doing is having real consequences for Trans people, especially in the UK.

People said similar things about adapting Fargo and Watchmen for television. Adaptations are not necessarily souless reflections of the source material (although, admittedly, they often are). IDK....

IDK. A decade is a long time. It's a big universe with many corners to explore, and not everyone that appreciates the franchise is a super dedicated fan that obsessed over meta theories and memorized everything about it for the past ten years.

New fans are being created every year, my 14-year-old sister saw the first movie in the theater just last year, and would definitely be all over any major new Harry Potter content.

And they don't need to literally repeat the movies. There are no hard rules preventing this from being good.
