Seems like the series is based on webnovel of the same name, with two story lines, one set in 1960s-70s, and another one with protagonist from the trailer set in 80s to 2000s. The novelist was born in 1952, and was sent "down to the countryside" for work for 8 years before coming back to Shanghai for health in 1977, and became a writer in 1985, writing this one in 2011.

Wong Ka Wai spoke Shanghainese as a kid and only learned Cantonese as a second dialect after immigrating to HK with this family. I would only want to watch this in Shanghainese with English/Chinese subs, I think (no thanks mandarin dub).

Unrelated. This trailer with English subs mentions an Orthodox Church building. Probably the St Nicholas, built in 1932, which was a warehouse, laundry wash house and restaurants after "closing" in 1949.
