Yeah, the last few seasons feel like they've sort of lost sight of what made the story so compelling. I liked this one description someone made once, where when they started the series, they thought they were getting into The Godfather. But then as the show went on, the last few seasons have been The Fast and The Furious.

And like, don't get me wrong, both are good for their own reasons. They're just different beasts.

as someone who was dead against the tv show (and books because of this, don't hate me yet) for years but last week gave in and thought "I'll have another go at it" and is currently watching season 6. Yes that's right, season 6 and I started watching last week (wife and kids went to the MIL's last weekend) do I dive into the books? how much of a recommendation would you give them

I am a huge fan of the books. Like, create a lot of content, several rereads, have made several lifelong friends through this series kind of huge fan. The story is leagues better than what we have the television show. Along with the rich detail of the world, there's a lot of great character work that the show misses.

But on the flip side of all that is that I don't know when the next book is coming out. No one does, not even George. The waiting has left a sour taste for a lot of fans, and can sometimes be excruciating because of how incredible the story in the books is.

It's become a lot harder for me to recommend people read a series with no end in sight, no matter how much I love it.

thank you for the honest opinion, I have seen posts about GRRM not setting dates for the books end and as annoying as that is I think I could deal with it knowing it won't be completed. Especially if the story fills other parts with more details, I have a few books on the "to read next" shelf so still have a bit of time to decide if I want to dive in or just accept the TV show as all I'll get.

As annoying as knowing the books won't get finished I think I'll be ok going into it with that knowledge, if the books are that rich in detail and (as they normally do) fill the story the way a TV show / movie can't I might be able to accept that's all I'll have. If I was in the same boat as everyone else I'm sure I would be right along side everyone waiting and hoping for the next announcement

I missed the favourite season question! I replied when I just woke up. I don't know if I could pick on honestly, Arya would have to be my favourite character though.

showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have elected not to be involved; after finishing the final season

I am happy to see they are not involved, when they have a strong story to follow they do a great job, without one they flounder and make horrible decisions. There was so many things I did not like about last season. But the main issue is it felt rushed and sloppy

the duo will transition to penning a new series of Star Wars films for Disney.

And I also definitely agree with what you said about Benioff and Weiss. I feel that they've missed out on a lot of what made the story so good, and they skip right from beginning to payoff, without the buildup that makes payoff feel earned. (Also want to note that I'm glad that this upcoming series will be written by a woman, since I think that Benioff and Weiss misunderstand what it means to write feminist stories. But that's just me.)

I'm pretty amped for this. This time period is vague enough in the books that there's plenty they can do with it. I wouldn't necessarily mind a Dance of the Dragons show, but what happens is basically already written.

On the flipside, there are a lot of good plot points in the Long Night that have already been hinted at, so we know there will be good stuff.

I dream of an ideal world, where TWOW is released soon alongside the release of the last season. For like, some forward movement.

This would be my dream. I need some more of those books. They're much better than the show.

I really enjoyed the first 3 books, but I got bored around halfway through A Feast for Crows when there were several long chapters about Theon's extended family and the Drowned God. I just didn't have the patience to read two hundred or so pages about characters I barely knew. I thought the show was much better in this regard. Are the books good enough for me to push through those chapters after having seen all of the show?

I'd agree that you're in a rough part. Things ramp up by the end of that book with some really good events. Keep in mind that the second half of A Feast for Crows and the first half of A Dance With Dragons happen at the same time and that the end of A Dance With Dragons is pretty far behind where the show is at. They also have a different story by that point, so it's like you get to experience something different. If you enjoy the show, the books will feel like a 'what if some people were still alive/what if some people died kind of situation to you.
            I hope you enjoy!
