I mean, it's bad but it's just a TV show

And the points it makes are definitely valid, but I wouldn't call it a plague on society. Especially given the current state of the world.

This style of exaggerating how bad something is as part of making a point is called a polemic and its use dates back to Ancient Greece.

If the original Big Bang Theory is a plague on society, I think Young Sheldon is a crime against humanity and its creators should be awaiting trial at The Hague.

I really thought the obsession with hating this show had long passed on reddit and people were just ignoring it now and memeing it mostly, but wowee since its ending was announced it has all come back and the hate has hit an all time high.

And I honestly never understood the hate, the laugh track is something people make fun of with all shows and the content didn't seem anything like 'nerd blackface' at least from what I watched of it and is insanely blown out of proportion, It has pretty much the same exact formula as Friends or How I Met Your Mother but oh no they are nerdy so it must just be a show making fun of nerd culture. And come on it was on CBS, the target demographic wasn't nerdy 20 somethings.

“It’s their status as nerdy nice guys that lets them off the hook for a wide range of creepy, entitled, and downright sexist behaviours,”

Is it? I can think of a dozen shows where very much non-nerdy male characters make the same/similar jokes and nobody bats an eye, like Friends, or How I Met Your Mother as I already mentioned.

I really liked Pop Culture Detective's piece on this The Adorkable Misogyny of The Big Bang Theory. Transcript also available here.

That video demonstrates a valid coherent critique of the big bang theory. Most of the "nerd blackface" comments are vapid, edgy, and empty rhetoric.

In the early seasons it had a tone of 'look at these guys doing nerdy stuff but having fun', then at some point it changed to 'hah look at these fucking nerds being weird'.

I feel like Big Bang Theory became a show about nerds, instead of being a show for nerds.

I haven't seen much of it. Do you think the characters on that show watch an equivalent show?

Isn't the critisim of it being "nerd black face" tied to the idea that a groups "qualities" are exaggered and mischaracterized for the sake of comedy and derision?

If a show hypothetically used black face the issue isn't "why does the character do something immoral/stupid/absurd?" The issue is "why is this group being represented in this way?"

The critisim of the Big Bang Theory's misogyny is virtually implicit in recognizing it as "nerd black face" because it makes the connection to black face.
