I “just can't wait” for them to make a villain who is a populist politician secretly controlled by people in suits with distinct Eastern European accents.

I think the original author Gerry Conway had some great points:

Inverse also asked Conway about the proliferation of the skull logo in the police and army. While people like “American Sniper” Chris Kyle appropriated the logo because, in his view, the Punisher was cool and “righted wrongs,” Conway thinks that’s bogus. At it’s core, he said, wearing the skull should come with a “fundamental understanding that this is not a good guy.”

I'm glad the original author sees the character as someone who isn't a hero - at least in the conventional sense. The Punisher may be a hero in his own mind and in his own world, but his actions have grave consequences.

I watched the Punisher and to be honest I didn't really get much except very mixed signals about how gun control is needed and how (somewhat) violence is bad but also "oh my god you guys just look at all this violence!" It's a bit of a paradox that never really sat well with me.
