The superheroes are the villains in Amazon's dark comedy 'The Boys' — Is it any good?

I'm so impressed with The Boys. I'm just over halfway through, and it's solid gold. The overall tone is dark but comedic -- really well-rounded. Especially for folks who like Preacher, The Tick,...

The overall tone is dark but comedic -- really well-rounded. Especially for folks who like Preacher, The Tick, Doom Patrol, etc, this is basically made for us.

Do others feel like that this is an adequate summary? How does it compare to Preacher and The Tick?

With a filthy mouth and a penchant for exploding people into puddles of blood, "The Boys" has some dark fun with this premise, until it starts to feel like a missed opportunity—the series pilot is a helluva hook, in that it can grab you and then drag you through the next less spirited seven hours, always hoping that something will seem as clever as its great premise.

Yes, I think that's a good summary. The show is enjoyable, but it has a couple of severe trope problems. I think this review sums it up nicely:...

The other thing I'll say is that Billy Butcher's accent is terrible.

"Let's patch together quotes from a dozen news sources to create a review" is a terrible way to review a tv show. You just end up cherry-picking quotes until you get something none of the actual authors would ever agree fully with.

That said, I'm intrigued by the idea of the show because I don't like the superhero genre. Or, to be more precise, I find myself being utterly indifferent to it, which is almost worse than outright hatred as far as tv shows go. I can't even see myself hate-watching most Marvel movies or tv shows; they are bland and cliched enough to be boring but not outrageously bad enough to watch purely for the pleasure of pointing out their failures. I'm sad that the box office is so dominated by $300m superhero flicks and Disney remakes. So, anything taking the piss out of the genre is automatically interesting.

      RE: Digg

Yep. I actually think it works a WHOLE lot better at fulfilling its original purpose of surfacing interesting stuff to read. Most of the other crowd-curation stuff, like Reddit, is basically just memes and discussion board now.

That said, I'm not sure how much of the curation is staff led vs. vote-led. I think the staff is basically parsing whatever is trending based on data (like retweets, reddit, etc.) and put it on the page and then the diggs that people give it affect where it shows up.

      RE: The Boys

I remember reading the comic book when it came out and thinking this was Garth Ennis getting way to Garth Ennisy. At some point the misanthropy and affected cynicism stops being funny and is kind of like "Ok dude, we get it. Can we try playing a different tune now?"

But that's when Ennis is at his best! When he's trying to make a point and everyone gets it but he thinks no one gets it so he just keeps trying to make his point.

Users can still submit links to Digg, but it won't be visible on the front page until it's been vetted by staff. I believe the front page is chronological (by the time linked on Digg, not the time originally published), but there's a "most dugg stories" section at the bottom, where I assume the most voted content ends up. Honestly I really like it, for the reasons @NaraVara lists. Digg is my go-to site for interesting reads, and where I've found most of the links I've posted here on Tildes.

It's not a Tick show unless it's been cancelled too soon though...
