Giri/Haji (duty/shame) Japanese/English BBC crime drama mini-series on netflix

We had nothing to watch and for once Netflix didn’t show utter shit as a recommendation and I found this. After checking the reviews, they seemed… positive. 100% on RT and Decider said "Stream It". As my wife and I both love British crime dramas, we decided to give it a chance.

And boy, was it worth it.

The show is in the genre of crime/detective/noir-ish/LBQT/drama ;) One warning, while it plays (estimated) 30% in Tokyo and 70% in London, the language is about 80% (estimated, again, might just be because those parts were harder) Japanese.

We follow a Japanese detective who (eventually) travels to London. Some characters are down to earth, some are cartoonish. None of them seem unfitting. I don’t want to say too much to avoid spoilers, but if you like the crime shows and can handle having to read subtitles most of the time (or speak Japanese I guess ;)), you should really give this a chance.

It’s on Netflix at least in the US and Germany ;)

I struggle finding anything on Netflix anymore. I know there's good stuff on the platform, I just can't find it. With all due respect, if there's a Netflix engineer reading, do us a solid and revert the commit that makes the current tile like 1/2 of the total screen real estate—your users want to see the following items in the list.

Anyway, this show looks great. Thanks for sharing this. Will bring it up to my wife later tonight. Nothing else much to say other than the fact that I quite enjoyed Dark, a sci-fi German show. Kind of gives me Twin Peaks and Stranger Things vibes, a bit. I'll recommend it's better with subtitles unless you speak German and don't need them. Found out about it off Netflix. Third and final season is on the way.

RE: Netflix, I can only imagine that what they are doing works for most people, it’s just that most people aren’t on HN/Reddit/Tildes (at least I have yet to see a single person on either of those 3 who likes their changes). For people like me they have been on a UX/recommendation-engine downwards spiral since their inception.

This is one of the better things I've found on Netflix. This one is French. https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/80189898?preventIntent=true

Thanks, I’ll check it out :) Though I’ll watch it dubbed English, and dubbing can be very hit or miss. My favorite french show on Netflix was "Black Spot"

Another French one that I enjoyed was The Crimson Rivers which can probably be found on easier to access services than all4.

This was pretty good. I watched it when it was first broadcast on BBC1. One thing that struck me was how sad everyone's life was, but they were all duty bound to plod on doing the best they could....

Another fairly recent BBC1 drama I enjoyed was Informer

Thanks for the informer hint, it sounds nice. BBC wants me to create an account, do you know if will that allow me to watch it from Germany?

You'll need a VPN I think. I've never tried to use iPlayer outside the UK though, so I'm not sure how effective their system is at blocking non-UK users.
