I had no idea that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) was so small at just 87 members. I had assumed that the group in charge of the Golden Globes was much larger and it is certainly concerning that such a tiny organization has so much influence in Hollywood.

Interviews with more than 50 people — including studio publicists, entertainment executives and seven current and former members — as well as court filings and internal financial documents and communications, paint a picture of an embattled organization still struggling to shake its reputation as a group whose awards or nominations can be influenced with expensive junkets and publicity swag.

The Times’ investigation also found that the nonprofit HFPA regularly issues substantial payments to its own members in ways that some experts say could run afoul of Internal Revenue Service guidelines. HFPA members collected nearly $2 million in payments from the group in its fiscal year ending in June 2020 for serving on various committees and performing other tasks — more than double the level three years earlier.

This to me is some of the most damning allegations from this report. Receiving money from a non-profit, especially if you serve on the organization's board, is a huge violation and can lead to an organization being stripped of its non-profit status by the IRS.

One thing I found that certainly doesn't help with these accusations of corruption and self-dealing is that the HFPA's IRS 990 form for 2019 (the latest available) shows that the organization does not have a conflict of interest policy (page 6, 12a). It also shows that the Board's directors are all receiving tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in compensation a year (page 7).
