I absolutely love the Y: The Last Man comics and am really excited for this project. I also highly recommend another of Brian K. Vaughn's work, SAGA. It is an extremely unique sci-fi series of two star-crossed lovers trying to escape a galaxy spanning war with their newborn child. It has some really amazing themes around family and redemption as well as great artwork.
Ditto about the Y: The Last Man comic. The show has gone through some serious production turmoil over the last few years though, which had me worried, but this review got me excited for it again...

And I read the first few issues of Saga back when it first came out, and enjoyed it, but totally forgot about it since then. So thanks for reminding me of its existence. I will have to jump back into it again now that it has more issues for me to binge through. :P

Nice! Saga is currently on a hiatus since 2018, but is expected to resume writing soon. In the meantime, there are 54 issues of Saga out and they all were recently compiled into a 1,300 page hardback compendium which is pretty cool. There are also 9 tradebacks that you can pick up if you prefer those. It is easily my favorite comics series I have read.
It's an Image comic, so I should just be able to get them all via comiXology... which is my preferred method since their iPad app is a great way to read comics, and their prices are reasonable....

Edit: Just downloaded the first volume on Hoopla, and browsing through it, the app actually looks to work great for comics! Thanks!

p.s. Fuck The Will. I felt bad for him, and the way that diplomat treated him, but now I almost wish she had done worse to him. He is totally irredeemable after what he just did.

And yeah, this is gonna suck having to wait for the conclusion after such an insane cliffhanger. So I can't imagine having had to wait 3 years already. :P

Yeah, I saw that. I have been enjoying it a lot. I really like that they took a lot of care to update the narrative for 2021, particularly on the trans-inclusiveness. I think a lot of the issues is just poor marketing. If I hadn't read the comic many years ago I probably would not have known what the show was about based on the trailers.
It really sucks that its cancelled though. Hopefully another service or outlet picks it up.

It being an FX on Hulu show also probably didn't help it much either. Here in Canada I was going to have to pirate it to watch it, since Hulu isn't available to us, and for some bizarre reason the show isn't actually available on Disney+ up here either, despite Disney owning both FX and Hulu. And the only place I could have legally watched it online up here is on the FXNOW app/site, which requires having a cable package with an FX subscription in order to access it.
Algorithm driven production, I assume? You know, Seinfeld was not successful until the third season. Third season! Algorithms would have robbed us from an iconic show!

Nah, apparently production took so long due to delays that contracts were about to expire again, and FX didn't want to have to extend them yet again, or renegotiate to renew them.

Ultimately, FX brass declined to pay $3 million to further extend options, not wanting to leave the cast in limbo yet again. The cancellation decision was, per sources, not based on viewership figures; Hulu, like other streamers, does not release traditional ratings data. That means FX had little to no data on which to evaluate the series, including how it performed in its entirety over a certain timeframe, etc. While sources note there had been a drop-off among viewers, it’s worth pointing out that mid-series declines are not uncommon now that viewer behavior has shifted to binge-watching entire seasons of a show.

However, unless another billionaire/media mogul swoops in to save the show, like what happened for The Expanse, I highly doubt Y:TLM will get a second season on a different platform since that's an exceedingly rare occurrence. :(

I read this series about 20 years ago. It was a different world, the setting was wild and whimsical. Back then an author didn't need to think about the consequences of their writing as much as today. As much as I'd love to see a faithful adaptation, I know this simply wouldn't fly. Not that there's anything deeply problematic about the source material, but certain themes are way more disputed today than they were before. Some things can only be addressed in a drama rather than a comedy.

Prepare to have it macerated. :( Still well worth it, if you can handle the heartache though.
I'll just add another column in my list of media to check out for emotional resiliency required and push that back a scosh...
