Why ‘Y: The Last Man’ Was Abruptly Canceled

Well, shit. Apparently the show has been cancelled already, before the first season even finished airing. I hadn't even started watching it yet either, since I was waiting for it to finish so I could binge it all in one go. :(

cc: @dubteedub, since I knew you were excited for it too.

Nah, apparently production took so long due to delays that contracts were about to expire again, and FX didn't want to have to extend them yet again, or renegotiate to renew them.

Ultimately, FX brass declined to pay $3 million to further extend options, not wanting to leave the cast in limbo yet again. The cancellation decision was, per sources, not based on viewership figures; Hulu, like other streamers, does not release traditional ratings data. That means FX had little to no data on which to evaluate the series, including how it performed in its entirety over a certain timeframe, etc. While sources note there had been a drop-off among viewers, it’s worth pointing out that mid-series declines are not uncommon now that viewer behavior has shifted to binge-watching entire seasons of a show.

The showrunner (Eliza Clark) and a few of the cast have taken to Twitter using #YLivesOn, trying to generate enough hype for the show in hopes that might happen. However, unless another billionaire/media mogul swoops in to save the show, like what happened for The Expanse, I highly doubt Y:TLM will get a second season on a different platform since that's an exceedingly rare occurrence. :(

It being an FX on Hulu show also probably didn't help it much either. Here in Canada I was going to have to pirate it to watch it, since Hulu isn't available to us, and for some bizarre reason the show isn't actually available on Disney+ up here either, despite Disney owning both FX and Hulu. And the only place I could have legally watched it online up here is on the FXNOW app/site, which requires having a cable package with an FX subscription in order to access it.

I read this series about 20 years ago. It was a different world, the setting was wild and whimsical. Back then an author didn't need to think about the consequences of their writing as much as today. As much as I'd love to see a faithful adaptation, I know this simply wouldn't fly. Not that there's anything deeply problematic about the source material, but certain themes are way more disputed today than they were before. Some things can only be addressed in a drama rather than a comedy.

And I read the first few issues of Saga back when it first came out, and enjoyed it, but totally forgot about it since then. So thanks for reminding me of its existence. I will have to jump back into it again now that it has more issues for me to binge through. :P

It's an Image comic, so I should just be able to get them all via comiXology... which is my preferred method since their iPad app is a great way to read comics, and their prices are reasonable....

          Edit: Yep. It's there.

I read it through Hoopla which is great if your library is subscribed to it.

Edit: Just downloaded the first volume on Hoopla, and browsing through it, the app actually looks to work great for comics! Thanks!

No, but seriously, Saga has been great so far. At times really sad, but still great. Thanks again for reminding me about it.

Prepare to have it macerated. :( Still well worth it, if you can handle the heartache though.

p.s. Fuck The Will. I felt bad for him, and the way that diplomat treated him, but now I almost wish she had done worse to him. He is totally irredeemable after what he just did.

And Prince Robot IV. :( He was still a bit of a pompous ass, but it felt like he had genuinely changed for the better after losing his title, reuniting with his Son, and falling for Petrichor. He definitely didn't deserve to go out like that either.

And yeah, this is gonna suck having to wait for the conclusion after such an insane cliffhanger. So I can't imagine having had to wait 3 years already. :P
