    Balatro

1.0.1 went live. So far I like the changes, though I'm worried maybe I just like them because they mostly make the game easier. The big ones for me are:

    • The tags that give you a certain kind of joker in the shop now also make the joker free. It was annoying before to take a tag and then maybe not be able to afford the joker. Now you don't have to worry, but also, if you don't like the joker you can take it then sell it immediately so you even gain money from it. You also have to worry way less about using a double tag on them.

    • The ante scaling has a slower ramp up. I have mostly been playing on Green stake and it's been feeling a lot better than my first few goes before the patch (pre-patch I did red, blue, yellow decks and a couple attempts at green. Post patch I've done green, black, magic, nebula, abandoned, checkered, zodiac).

    • When you beat a boss you can check the upcoming blinds for the new ante while you're in the shop. Before you had to do a shop blind (pun not intended) after each boss.

    • Blue seals now give you a planet card corresponding to the last hand played before victory. This can really help you scale. I like it a lot because I found the blue seals near-useless before. It is good to have some bad things in the game to make the good things good, but I feel like with something as rare as seals it's good to have them all be powerful. I went to Derek Zoolander's Center For Kids Who Can't Balatro Good and made a deck with Blue Steel cards and was playing Flush 5s and generating 3x Flush 5 upgrades every blind.

    • A bunch of little tweaks to jokers, I'm mostly happy with or haven't noticed a difference.

    • Some major changes to Orange and Gold stake (oh and the Jokerless challenge), but I haven't tried them yet.

An anecdote, with some context. There's a joker called Gros Michel that gives you +15 mult but has a 1/4 chance to die at the end of each round played. But after it does this, later on the shop you may find the Cavendish (both are bananas) joker , that gives x3 mult and has a 1/1000 chance to die at the end of the round. Post-patch, the initial chance was changed from 1/4 to 1/6. So you get to keep your +Mult joker longer (potentially) but it's harder to get the xMult joker. So the first thing I do in a run is take a polychrome (gives x1.5 mult) joker tag, and it's a polychrome Gros Michel! With the reduced chance of it dying, I feel like this baby is gonna carry me at least to ante 3 or 4. And it's free! This new patch is insane! Beat the next blind, POP! goes the banana. I burst out laughing. Also this run: I played against the boss that makes 1/7 cards get drawn face-down. My entire opening hand was face-down. I did I double take to see if I wasn't mistaken and it wasn't actually the boss that makes you draw your first hand face-down. I really wish I would have thought to take screenshots and/or record the seed, but I didn't. I lost the run, I don't remember if I even beat that boss.

    Celeste

I beat a couple levels from the intermediate lobby of the Strawberry Jam mod but haven't really felt excited to try more. I think part of it is the levels seem like such a mixed bag, and I don't like having to wander around the overworld to get one kind of randomly. As tiny a barrier as that is...I also recently went back and played some of my favourites from the beginner lobby. They were still fun, and there are some more I want to re-visit, but yeah, that overworld is still a bit of a pain...

I have been replaying the base game, and last night I felt like I was ready to try for the Golden strawberries on the C sides. Mainly because they're short, I've had a lot of practice on them, and usually the bulk of the length are in the last screen (which you have to do without dying anyway). The only other goldens I've gotten before at 1A and 2A. First I tried 1C for a bit and it wasn't going so well. So I decided to really warm up and try for 7C. Funny enough I was having trouble with the first screen at first, but after some more practice I was able to get the golden berry! After that I thought I may as well go for 8C as that's the next hardest for me. Again after a little practice I got the golden! 6, 5, 4, 3 (ughhhh I hate that last screen with Oshiro), 2...1! I got all the C-side golden berries in one night! I really surprised myself. I will likely go for the B-sides next but I think since they have so many more screens it's going to take me a lot longer.

Some actors, including Jennifer Aniston and Sean Bean, have said that intimacy co-ordinators are unnecessary, or that they stifle the spontaneity of sex scenes

Maybe I read too much into it, but the wording made it sound like those actors were making sweeping anti-intimacy-coordinator statements. I looked up what they said, and of course it's a little softer.

    Jennifer:

Having [director] Mimi there, you’re protected. I never felt uncomfortable. Jon [Hamm] was such a gentleman, always — I mean every move, every cut, “You OK?” It was also very choreographed. That’s the beauty of Mimi and our gorgeous editor, the music and lighting. So, you don’t prepare. They asked us if we wanted an intimacy coordinator. I’m from the olden days, so I was like, “What does that mean?” They said, “Where someone asks you if you’re OK,” and I’m like, “Please, this is awkward enough!” We’re seasoned — we can figure this one out. And we had Mimi there.

So, this was about her personal decision not to have one because she thought it would make her feel less comfortable (fair) and she feels experienced enough to handle it without one (also fair). But it's not her saying they're [all] unnecessary. I also find it funny that she praises Jon for being a gentleman for asking if she's OK, then doesn't like the idea of having another person asking her if she's OK haha.

    Sean:

“Game of Thrones” actor Sean Bean says intimacy coordinators “spoil the spontaneity” of shooting a sex scene.

“It would inhibit me more because it’s drawing attention to things,” Bean, who played Ned Stark in the hit fantasy show, said of having an intimacy coordinator in the room. “Somebody saying, ‘Do this, put your hands there, while you touch his thing…”

“I think the natural way lovers behave would be ruined by someone bringing it right down to a technical exercise,”

    ...

When the interviewer pointed out that intimacy coordinators can help to protect actors in the wake of #MeToo, Bean responded: “I suppose it depends on the actress. This one [referring to [Lena] Hall] had a musical cabaret background, so she was up for anything.”

It sounds like he is speaking hypothetically here, not from experience....and maybe would inhibit him / make his job more difficult as an actor but weighted against the safety of scene partners that's insignificant. And while he ended on a cringeworthy phrase he did at least concede that it would be helpful for at least some actresses.

    Lena responded to Sean's statement:

The actress corrected two points in that last assertion from Bean writing, “Just because I am in theater (not cabaret, but I do perform them every once in a while) does not mean that I am up for anything.”

She also made clear that she felt entirely at ease with Bean in the mango scene, but that does not mean she feels intimacy coordinators are superfluous.

“If I feel comfortable with my scene partner and with others in the room then I won’t need an intimacy coordinator,” she wrote. “BUT if there is any part of me that is feeling weird, gross, over exposed etc… I will either challenge the necessity of the scene or I’ll want an IC.”

She ended her thoughts with, “I do feel that intimacy coordinators are a welcome addition to the set and think they could also help with the trauma experienced in other scenes. Sometimes you need em sometimes you don’t but every single person and scene and experience is different.”

Mors Principium Est, melodeath; thank you Andy Gillion for saving the band.

And thanks for nothing Ville Viljanen for unceremoniously booting Andy out of the band after he did the majority of the work on their last album (statement also archived on reddit here if you don't want to read it on facebook) to replace him with the band's original guitarists.

If you like Andy's work, he also has 2 solo albums out: one from before getting booted (which was one of the things that made Ville mad) called Neverafter ("a predominantly instrumental concept album composed of symphonic, progressive and melodic death metal elements"), and one after called Arcade Metal (another instrumental concept album based on video game music featuring a bunch of solos from other guitarists, e.g. Matt Heafy of Trivium, Jeff Loomis of Arch Enemy, Per Nilsson of Scar Symmetry, Stephen Taranto).

Update: finished the remaining Balatro challenges. I am the 0.6%! I honestly thought I would be stuck on Jokerless forever. Kept dying at ante 2 or 3 over and over. Getting the vouchers that decrease the round helped give me time to power up. Also got a burst of cash (the $15 for beating a boss then a Hermit card [double your money - up to $20] in the shop), and some early Jupiter cards (upgrade Flush).

    Album of winning state

I've completed 18/20 of the challenges. The last 3 are real doozies. There are some changes to the game coming down the pipe in the beta version that will make them easier. Part of me really wants to beat them before the changes get pushed to everyone. Part of me doesn't like doing really difficult things for no reason. Conflicted...

    Slay the Spire

Between Android and Steam I now have a combined playtime of over 1000h (about 650/350 split). I wish the stats page did a better job at tracking things I care about, mainly granularity between act 3/4 victories and act 3/4 deaths. Maybe even separation of the stats into phases, like "these are your stats from before/after you had gotten to A20". It seems that some things were left unchanged from when ascension mode first got added to the game which is a bit of a shame. Hopefully the sequel will be better at all that stuff.

    Blasphemous

I've spent a couple hours with it and it's just not for me. I think the entire Metroidvania genre may not be for me since I've bounced off a few now...

Most of the basic enemies felt overly spongey. I don't know if the game is maybe trying to encourage me to try to skip them or if later on you get a lot stronger and get to cut through them like butter and see how much you've grown. But for now it feels like too much of a slog. I feel like (at least in this stage of the game) the dodge slide isn't that great at its purpose; parry is much more important. The story/lore/setting is a big selling point for a lot of people but to me it just feels weird for the sake of being weird. I don't mind that it's gruesome and dark, but I don't necessarily love it either.

The art is very beautiful, which is mainly what drew me to it in the first place.

    Dune: Imperium - Uprising

Have played a couple more times. I really like the sandworm combat mechanic. It's so nice to have a path to combat victories alternative to Heighliner. And you have to do a lot of setup to get them. Spies I still really like, but our last couple games have had issues with having cards available that can go to spied locations. Without that additional freedom of movement, the mechanic feels a lot more clunky. Card market availability is an issue for me with the game in general, and we play with the "sand worm eats cards" house rule, i.e. we trash+replace the last card out of the market at the end of the round to keep the cards flowing.

You can also get a microSD card to expand your storage. I put my ROMs and big Halo MCC install on one, which leaves a lot of room for games on the main drive (I also have the 512GB LCD model).

Yeah, the main female character feels uncannily similar to Kerrigan from StarCraft.

One of the first things I saw when I googled this company was that it was reported last year they laid off a huge portion of their staff. And the next thing I saw was that they backed an NFT-based MMO called Age of Dinos.

Their website is currently just a splash screen with a promo image for this game and tomorrow's date on it. I guess more info will come then.

Sometimes I feel / felt that way too. I come from an MTG background where I loved the constructed formats and hated the limited ones (sealed, draft). But then you kind of need to redesign the whole floor/enemy/boss gauntlet to still have a challenge for your perfectly crafted deck and you have a totally different game.

Maybe the way to do it would be to just let you peek at all the rewards that will be available from each fight and shop - i.e. not perfect deckbuilding, but you could still plan your route in order to slowly craft your deck the way that seems optimal from the choices.

Yeah, I'm in a similar boat, even more play time, but I've only done a few of the dailies, and did endless mode just to have the Pride curse in my collection. I think at first my thought process was "there's no point playing any other way than trying to unlock the next ascension / getting A20H kill with the next character" but then after I had done everything I just never felt drawn to it again.

I'm just part of the segment of the audience that believes I would be better served (would have a more enjoyable experience, based on the way I want to interact with the game) if I had better access to one.
