But one real difference is that American households imo are much more likely to "give up". If your kid only wants to eat chicken nuggets, then get some chicken nuggets. When I was raised, it was much more of a "deal with it" attitude, which I think is typical of asian households. If I didn't want to eat what was on the dinner table? Then have fun being hungry tonight.

This seems to vary a lot in America. In parts of the South, I've known families that always serve miscellaneous canned vegetables (sometimes even homecanned!), and if you don't eat them it's downright offensive. At least amongst some of the older people I've met, it's actually a holdover from the Great Depression where their parents raised them to value every bit of food they could get. Of course, this can lead to overeating because it's rude not to finish everything on the plate.

I'm not sure, the bare minimum is voting in my mind, so I lose it when someone talks about "protesting by staying home". I couldn't care less if they don't want to vote in one race because "both candidates are the same." Just showing up and making yourself heard in races that matter (because politics is both local and national) feels like a very low bar to clear.

I don't think we need to be fatalistic. There are plenty of provinces and countries that have passed laws which are having a positive impact. Canada has a carbon tax for example.

Many journalists are, for worse imo, addicted to Twitter's scroll. I don't think something like YouTube is a drop in replacement for Twitter.

I'm not sure if you read the paper if you thought it was about categorizing personality types. The fact of the matter is, most people would not say "I talk a lot" and "I rarely talk". Those are extremely contradictory statements. This isn't some complex psychoanalysis. It's a simple "which one of these better describes you?"

In psychometrics, researchers try really hard to measure and account for Internal Consistency. In simple terms, did the respondent answer "Yes, I love ice cream" and "Yes, I hate ice cream"? Psychologists are supposed to be trained to look for consistency and evasiveness in assessments and psych panels. If related questions have contradictory answers, there's an issue.

This study says MTurk respondents are totally inconsistent on semantic antonyms and, in other studies, nearly identical questions. So, we shouldn't trust MTurk surveys.

Creating more junior engineers doesn't change the situation with many companies only hiring experienced engineers. The problem isn't unique to software engineering. Even for lower pay, it's hard to justify hiring some new graduate with 0 years of industry experience versus someone with even a couple years under their belt. Training takes a lot of valuable time.

I'm sometimes reminded of the climate protestors that destroy art to draw attention.

There are far more effective ways to change the world than seizing private property and harming other students. The protestors could be much more effective by commiting fewer unnecessary crimes. Short of full blown revolution, violence doesn't further the cause.

If the protestors want to create enduring social change, then their tactics largely seem to be failing. All the opinion polling I've been able to find is the protests have hardened opinions. They aren't changing hearts and minds by taking over campus buildings or letting antisemitism seep into their chants and signage.

Edit: See Brown University protestors that had conversations with administration officials (in addition to nonviolent encampments) that led to planned votes on real changes: https://www.browndailyherald.com/article/2024/04/brown-university-to-vote-on-divestment-at-october-corporation-meeting-encampment-to-be-voluntarily-cleared

No, I just care about proving the injustice of the system through acts that garner sympathy and understanding. Sitting at a counter you legally can't because of your skin color then getting assaulted is radically different from taking over private property then getting arrested for trespassing.

Violent acts do an awful job increasing support for a cause. Protests should prove the injustice of the systems through a disproportionate response from an unjust authority. Protestors disrupting students' buildings for learning just hurts their cause's popularity.

If the protestors were violently swept from a public square, they would've gotten more sympathy and support than they did by hijacking private property and commons.

In an interview in Sunday’s Le Parisien, Sy, one of France’s most popular celebrities, was questioned by readers. One asked him if it was difficult to be black in France, even for him. He said it was a dangerous question that required nuance but replied: “Of course there are instances when it’s difficult to be black in France. That doesn’t date from today and unfortunately it’s ongoing. It can happen at any time in one’s life.”
    . . .
He said: “We must all ask ourselves how do we want to be together, to interact, to be part of a group. Because today everyone in the public space is talking about the individual, about themselves and has forgotten the group.” He said it was crucial in France to rebuild a sense of the collective.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, his comments have a lot more nuance than the headline implies. I have read complaints that it can be harder for Black people to integrate into Europe as there's always a sense of othering due to skin color. A real shame since immigrants can bring incredible things to a country. Hollywood is arguably so successful in large part due to it being the premier film destination for anyone born anywhere.

(Side note: I'm not familiar with French media, so I originally wondered if the show Lupin was based on the Japanese series Lupin the Third. Apparently it's the other way around.)

Fortunately, flu viruses are generally well understood, but everyone I personally know in healthcare may just walk off the job tomorrow if there's another pandemic caused by fools that don't take basic precautions like pasteurizing milk.
