Today I was kinda surprised to see my inbox all blown up but I get it. I'm just kind of annoyed I can't talk about lotr entertainment without straying into election topics I had no intention of raising.

Maybe I should have mentioned that I enjoyed the elrond / durin bromance. It might have balanced it out a little more.

Ya you are not wrong. That's why it's such a serious topic. However, not everyone has kids and everyone's circumstances are different. My daily carry spends no time in the safe. If I needed it while at home there is no time to open a safe in that circumstance and thus it has a good reason to be where it is. I could understand accidentally letting a round fall off my night stand because I took the round out of the chamber and it rolled into a bag. The thought of making a procedural mistake and going to prison over it because of the politicization of the issue is frightening to me and every other cc I know.

That is not an idightment of the responsibility of gun owners, who are in my experience extraordinarily responsible, it's just a reality of day to day handling and use of a firearm. While responsible storage is important it's not a tier 1 safety issue because a spare round rolling around is not an inherent danger by itself. It will always take a back seat to the 4 rules of gun safety because you just don't have that luxury when handling a firearm. While both the round and the gun are not inherently dangerous by themselves you treat them differently , if you know what you are talking about, because you always treat a firearm as though it were loaded. It's literally the first thing you are taught about handling a firearm and with good reason.

"Bullets aren't a stray french fry or a random pen."

They are not but I carry a firearm every day. They are a part of life for me. Firearm safety is an important and serious topic. However, it's also not very well represented in this thread. Leaving an unattended loaded firearm around a toddler is not the moral equivalent of having a loose round from a broken box of ammunition get lost in a bag.

In general though I agree that responsible handling firearms is an important issue which is why training is so important. This is especially true for new firearm owners who have little to no experience.

Having plinked with a 22 a couple times and locking it in your basement for 15 years is just fundamentally not the same thing as carrying a defensive pistol on your person every day. I'm not implying you specifically do or don't have that experience but I can tell you that a lot of the very opinionated commentors here do not.

While I agree with you that ammunition should be stored properly and not rolling around on my floorboard (oops), it's also true that a single round of ammunition is not inherently super dangerous. Even if you did something phenomenally stupid like hold a lighter to the primer or strike it with a nail it's unlikely to hospitalize someone. Perhaps a large rifle round might do some serious damage to your hand but without a chamber to contain and direct the force it's just not as deadly you might think. The round is just an object. It does not have any inherent moral qualities and it won't go off on its own without a serious amount of molestation.

I have 0 interest in the culture wars. Anyone reading culture warrior stuff in what I wrote is jumping to conclusions. From my perspective, that's on them.

I had a round rolling around in the floorboard of my car the other day where it fell out of my range bag. Lock me up. I'm irresponsible.

What I said was not completely serious. I am a pretty big fan of the books and I find the contrast in between the high production value and the terrible writing/characters/storytelling to be extraordinary. It's one of the worst things I've ever seen.

That is an opinion that I am entitled to express. Given the opportunity I would do it again but perhaps I would explicitly state that enjoyment of an entertainment product doesn't make anyone less human. It's just fun to disagree about things sometimes.

    1. I'm anti war and anti US imperialism.
    2. I'm pro 2nd amendment and recognize the natural right to self defense.
    3. I believe in small government and controlling the budget. Running deficits simply borrows from future generations and it's morally wrong.

I could go on but I think those are pretty controversial topics that belong in the Zeitgeist. I'm not an offensive person or a racist. I've been a professional and I returned to school in '21 to try and better myself. In the fall I will start my first semester of graduate school in computer science. In other words, I'm a perfectly normal person who doesn't wish harm on anyone and who understands what it means to live amongst people who disagree with me 24/7.

My world view is shaped by my beliefs about the morality of the use of force. They are logical outgrowths of my guiding principle in a similar way to the way in which people at NPR talk about their North Star.

In my book that doesn't make me a bad person. It doesn't make me stupid or ignorant or any of the other pejoratives that are knee jerk thrown at me by individuals expecting a Republican to smear.

To the tildes communities great credit I have seen almost none of that here. I debated not even responding to this because I don't really want to fight about it. I just wanted to express my feelings on the issue. Hopefully, you can respect that.

Berliner's article really resonates with me. I'm not a Republican but I am a libertarian and I see the ideological lines being drawn in the sand via the media as totally destructive to our nation's cohesion.

The 3 stories brought up really do a great job of highlighting how an organization that receives public funds to report the news has become an advocacy wing of a certain political perspective.

I grew up listening to NPR in the 90's and I have listened to it off and on until around the time of the pandemic. I usually found that reporting to be accurate and interesting. I started working nights in 2015. I quit that job in 21 in part due to it's effects on my health. It was like waking up from a dream and finding myself in an alternate reality. What a strange and hostile place my country has become for people who think differently than the zeitgeist.

It reminds me of some videos the pentagon released a few years ago that made their way around the msm as proof of aliens but was just birds and the like. It turns out military pilots don't know how their gun cameras operate, just how to use them.
