    Maybe "creating digital experiences"* for events, museums, trade shows and retail is a viable alternative that's more ajdacent to gaming but also not really typical software engineering. It's pretty niche and I don't know how the salary compares though.
    In Vienna there are for examle Bildwerk, Mediaapparat and THIS.PLAY, in Linz there is Responsive Spaces.
