I'm actually replaying CotM right now, for the first time since when it originally released on GBA! Nearly done with it, and I have to agree with basically everything you said. How in the world did they think that double-tap to run was a good control scheme?

On difficulty, I didn't have too much trouble with the double dragons, managed to beat them before getting the "health recharge" DSS ability. After dying a few times I figured out that you can stand in the middle and jump over their head swings. I also figured out early on how overpowered the cross toss is, and that helped a lot. So far, the hardest part for me has been climbing the tower with the bloody swords and marionettes. Back in the day I remember getting frustrated on the final boss and quitting, hopefully I can finally finish the game now, 20 years later!

I started paying for Kagi search this year, it's definitely $11/mo better than Google, and they have guides for setting Kagi as default search engine for all browsers and platforms.

I think you're right that they should have addressed this. The sophonts could have zoomed around at the speed of light checking out local star systems until a suitable, empty one was found....

Why don't they just pick suitable uninhabited star system in vicinity and colonize space which is better long term strategy anyways?

I think you're right that they should have addressed this. The sophonts could have zoomed around at the speed of light checking out local star systems until a suitable, empty one was found. Guessing they just couldn't come up with a satisfying answer so they just ignored it and left it to us.

Best I can do is: alien reasoning? They found a planet they liked and judged the risk of fighting humanity to be less than the risk involved with waiting to fund another planet?

Or: maybe the sophonts only last 500 years, so long enough to get to earth but it would be a risk to only get 1000 light-years of exploration to find another suitable host planet? I might have gone with that one, actually.

It might take 100 years to get there, or it might take 10, idk. Or maybe we pull a rabbit from the hat and arrest climate change, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

It will happen. As climate change progresses, eventually people living in high-risk places won't have any options left for insurance, and so people won't be able to get mortgages, and these places will become depopulated as they fall into ruin. I think building codes will be abandoned too, and you'll see a thinned-out remaining populace living in unpermitted, ramshackle shanties and in the decaying, patched together husks of older buildings.

He has his followers go sit out and look at the night sky, says you can "will" UFOs to appear, and they point at every moving light in the sky as evidence of this.

Or: OMG, this fucking writer, why couldn't it have been anyone else to get scammed so we could move on with our day.

John Frusciante, sometime guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has a prolific solo career. Some of it is profound and some is trash. Some of it is somewhat similar to the more subdued Chili Peppers output, so if you like the vibe on By The Way but aren't in love with the funky aspects or Anthony Kiedis, check this out. The best albums are:

    • To Record Only Water For Ten Days (third? solo release, first good one, and I think first where he was sober. Shredding, soaring guitars, vocals, drum machine, lo-fi recording, a masterpiece)
    • The Will To Death (it's an electric guitar but it feels like an acoustic album)
    • The Empyrean (concept-y album, this is John at his most when his most was most good)
    • Inside of Emptiness (this is what drugs feel like to me)

But, if solo projects don't count as side projects, then check out Ataxia, which was a band John formed with the guy from The Mars Volta and the guy who replaced John in the Chili Peppers. They released two albums (EPs maybe?) and are solidly in the top half of the Frusciante pantheon.

And now for something completely different - if you like Sleep or High on Fire, Matt Pike did vocals (and guitar I think?) for a band called Kalas that released a single album, and it's so fucking good. If you're even vaguely interested then you'll probably like it.
