ingannilo LinkI'm playing through the Mass Effect trilogy using the legendary edition on gamepass. I played maybe ten minutes of ME2 on PC years ago, but didn't get into it at all. Starting with the first game...I'm playing through the Mass Effect trilogy using the legendary edition on gamepass. I played maybe ten minutes of ME2 on PC years ago, but didn't get into it at all. Starting with the first game after several years of growing to love RPGs and with the graphical/QOL improvements has made all the difference. The hooked on the story, world, and characters.
Somehow I've never had the story spoiled for me in all my years of reading and talking about games. I've just heard that Andromeda kind of ruined it... But that's all I knew.
I'm doing missions in the order suggested by the spoiler free mission guide on reddit and trying to do all the side content. The in game timer has me at 60 hours, but I think that includes lots of long pauses when I fell asleep or left for work. Still, it feels like a really deep game for it's time and I love the characters and alien cultures. Every moment spent reading in this game feels like time well spent, and I'd seriously love to sit down and have a beer with Wrex, Tali, Joker, or just about anyone else from the Normandy crew.
My only complaint is that the exploable planets (except for the major plot planets) all have the same three or four POIs with little variation. In that sense it reminds me a bit of starfield. But overall I think bioware nailed the RPG elements in ways that BGS missed with starfield. Namely in the world building and cultural intrigue. I really want to know more about all the different species, their beliefs, systems of government, et cetera.
Best excited to get to the end of ME1 and probably ill go straight to ME2 when done.

I've heard different (but all bad) things about Mississippi over my years, but never heard about the issues in Jackson going on now, nor the repeated destruction of the Till memorial. That's crazy. How is this the same country as, shit, even Florida? Goddamn indeed. Literally.

When I read a thread and feel compelled to reply, I do so if I have time. Because time is my most scarse resource lately it's often the case that I won't reload tildes for a day or so after leaving a comment. That next day session might be as brief as five minutes, and in that time I may not notice that I've received replies. I don't check the sidebar too much. Maybe because I'm conditioned by pushier websites that demand your attention with lots of bright and flashy things if you have a message.
Definitely interesting to read this thread, and I'll try to be more mindful. I'd like to see this community flourish and never considered that my commenting habits might be harmful to that goal.

ingannilo Link ParentI played through cyberpunk back when it released, and then again just a few weeks ago. The game is miles and miles better than where it started with the 2.0 release. If you didn't get phantom liberty, then I'd advise getting it if you can. It adds a lot to the story and gameplay in a way that helps the city feel more fleshed out.
But yeah, glad you're enjoying so far. Always interests me to hear what a new player thinks about this one.

ingannilo Link ParentI think this is the best option for 90% of highschool grads. Most do not have the discipline or required background to really begin studying in their area of interest. Hell, most don't even have...Community colleges are a great starting point to get a two year degree, and you can transfer to a four year if desired.

Hell, most don't even have an area of interest at the end of highschool. If you play right (exploring electives while knocking out gen eds, selectively using Pell grants [in the US] and sometimes paying out of pocket for your exploratory electives) then you can transfer in 1.5-3 years to a university with all your basic/general coursework done, having a very good idea of what field you want to work within, focus almost entirely on the upper level coursework for your major, AND still have sufficient government grants left over to cover tuition at a state school (assuming you transfer to a university in a state where you have residency).
I worked construction/landscaping/food service jobs for four years after dropping out of high school, then once I had a little more maturity and a real desire to learn something I got my GED, went back to community College, and explored my area of interest while doing Gen eds. I changed my major at CC from a humanity to mathematics when I discovered I actually had some talent there and the rest was easy... Or as easy as it can be.
I've taught at universities and see students with the problems being discussed here. They take out loans and grind themselves to dust with stress trying to rush through the degree their parents/advisor/whomever wants for them. Then they quit and deal with the less fun side of student loans, getting a net negative experience.
Now I teach at a community college in the town near my alma matter, and I'm constantly advising students to slow down, explore other areas, and find their talents/interests here before transferring to uni. It works out better nearly all the time.
My partner changed from physics to nursing to aircraft maintenance and repair. If she'd rushed the transfer, then right now she would hate her life, have endless loans, terrible grades, and (if lucky) be on her way to a third or fourth tier grad program in an area she dislikes, assuming she survived undergrad. The downside is that we don't have any income from her yet, but at least this way we're minimizing debt and finding her a job she loves.
Basically you have to know how the system works to play the game well, and very few 17-18 year olds know anything about the working world or their own preferences in that world.
I'm rambling, but really just wanted to offer some evidence in support of the two year college -> uni transfer model. It made my career and totally reshaped how I thought about education. Trade schools are a big part of this too, and I hope to see more integration with vocational training and community colleges as time goes on.

I'm not super skilled at souls-likes, and this one is pretty damned hard, but the quality of the environments, music, story, enemy design, and...I'm playing Lies of P right now, and it's awesome! I'm not super skilled at souls-likes, and this one is pretty damned hard, but the quality of the environments, music, story, enemy design, and especially the combat make it worthwhile. I plan to finish the game and maybe even do an ng+ run (which I practically never do, even for games I like). Genuinely impressed by what neowiz came up with here.

It's very informative and also super cute. Written from the perspective of a dude talking to a literal buzzard, who describes air currents and how to stay aloft with minimal effort/energy. I loved reading it and it taught me loads and loads about glider flying.
My other big hobby (and career), mathematics, has many bibles. Best known are probably Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis and Dummit and Foote's Abstract Algebra. My personal bible here changes often but was most recently Elliptic Functions According to Eisenstein and Kronecker by Andre Weil.

Because my mother was able to raise three kids with the exact same career/job title that I have, I make twice as much numerically as she did, and it's literally impossible for me to provide for my one kid in anything close to the way she did. I did get to but a house (like she did) but it's less than half the size, built twenty years before hers, and in horrible shape.
Literally because it doesn't matter if the numbers went up when standards of living and my ability to provide for my family have dropped.

I wonder if they left any nervous connections in tact, and if there's any interest in simulating that systems connections. Blood flow and oxygenation kinda feel like solved problems (I didn't know we were previously unable to do this) but any ability to communicate with a physically disconnected brain would be hugely exciting to me.

There are many people whose whole careers are dedicated to patrolling and enforcing animal experimental ethics, and given the publicity around this experiment, I imagine...This is indeed the case. Even more so given that the person responsible for his death was also a cop. It screams cover up to me personally, but I know that I carry a lot of bias, so I'm really wondering what other folks think/feel when reading this. Any thoughts?

What do you think, people of tildes? From my read, there's no way the cop who struck and killed this man isn't guilty of vehicular manslaughter at least. The lack of reporting and transparency is so suspicious. Do you think this is as corrupt as it sounds? What ought to be done here, and what authority could be trusted to investigate?
Sorry if this is old news. I learned about it recently and didn't see anything on tildes discussing the event.

I've only played through the intro/tutorial bits so far, but it seems really deep. I am still finishing up my cyberpunk phantom liberty playthrough, but once I get done there I'll be diving fully into Sifu.
I also downloaded Lies of P and can't wait to try it, but that's 3rd on my list and I've yet to boot the game up
Good writing is subjective, and like the other replies here I'd argue that your use of punctuation is not jarring. There are rules for some of these things, and sometimes it's worthwhile to break the rules for the sake of readability, style, or tone.
There is an inappropriate comma habit that I know bothers a lot of English snobs, and that's the use of a comma wherever one may pause when speaking aloud, usually for emphasis. You don't seem to be doing this.
Parentheticals are fine either comma spliced or with actual parentheses. Semicolons should only be used to join two independent clauses (phrases with a subject and a verb that could be complete sentences on their own). Commas with conjunctions should be used the same way as semicolons, to join independent clauses.
Irksome to me personally is bad apostrophe use. Remember that unless designation possession (eg This is Lily's turd) an apostrophe indicates a contraction. Most often bungled with its vs it's, where the latter means only "it is".
Beginning sentences with conjunctions is a style choice that I don't frown upon. I am also find ending a sentence with prepositions. English professors may tell you not to do this, but it's worthwhile to avoid some really contrived constructions. And sometimes it just feels right to begin with a conjunction, like when semicolons feel too precocious but you want to connect the clauses.
In grad school (math, not any language stuff) I got pretty nerdy with my writing. I fell in love with the style guide The Complete Plain Words and developed some of my own tastes. Today when advising folks on good mathematical writing I tell them: first be correct, then be clear, and finally be brief. Correctness, clarity, and brevity are the priorities, and in that order.
Sorry if I'm rambling. This is stuff I think about a lot, and very few people ever wanna talk about it in my current job.
