Same thing for Apple, why not use the walled garden if it’s possible to keep the garden gate to some extent open?

But I also got an M2 MacBook Air so I joined the dark side as well.

All in all it’s a good setup. I need it to be portable for 90% of the time with good battery life and if I need Windows, it’s waiting for me at home and doesn’t take up too much space.

As a mod, your're not supposed to use it solely to ban users. Reddit states it is not 100% accurate.

As a user, if you connect with a VPN or through an IP that has some ban evaders ascribed to it, you may be identified by mistake.

If by forced you mean “through effort” then yes. You can form friendships with people that you would think aren’t “compatible” with enough extra effort. Now I’m going to controversial with my next sentence…

The extra effort only has to come from one side. Something I noticed in general is that there is a reciprocal effect even if one side is less active about it. I’m not saying there does not need to be effort from both potential friends, but I think only one side needs the “extra” effort.

I think there is some truth to the story of Gilgamesh and Enkidu. My childhood best friend and I hated each other at first and fought a lot, we were however from the only two Slavic immigrant families in the apartment complex and our parents met a lot. I don’t know who put in more effort, but after a lot of crazy fights, we became best friends. I think that childhood experience taught me to fight through the barriers that some people put up (on a deeper level, also the barriers you put up for yourself). You need some force there.

Bees rolling wooden balls, apparently, for fun...

It really looks like the observer was anthropomorphizing the bee with the experiment setup. The bees were in a unnatural environment with nothing other than a few essentials and the wooden balls. The bees checked the wooden balls and did something to them. Honestly, watching the videos, it seems to me like the bees are struggling with the balls rather than having fun, maybe checking if they are dangerous? Maybe they return to the box where the balls used to be to check if danger is still there? Two can play the anthropomorphism-game. Maybe it's not play, maybe it's bee-pilates.

The experimenters kind of decided that the ball rolling cannot be an attempt to clear clutter or to mate, but the reasoning did not seem so conclusive. And I am no bumblebee biologist, but maybe their repertoire is more varied than just sex and cleaning and there are many many more behaviors they need to exclude first.

Here's the study with videos: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003347222002366?via%3Dihub

Anyway, it would be more meaningful if bumble bees actually would be know to 'play' in nature and this was a study trying to emulate a phenomenon in nature. Otherwise, the scientist here didn't just discover that bumblebees have fun, they also witnessed bees discovering the concept of fun for the first time. What is the evolutionary reason bees would play?

This article should be taken with a huge grain of salt because it jumps from this very narrow observation about bumble bees in weird wooden boxes to to the mind-blowing idea of insect-consciousness.

There isn't even an agreedupon definition of consciousness yet. For a long time, it was impossible to even start studying consciousness with objective empirical experiments. Psychological and neurological experiments test a specific concept of consciousness that is still being honed in on through medical case studies with, for example, trauma patients and psychological experiments.

Did the concept of consciousness graduate out of being a philosophical concept? It seems to be in a sort of scientific grey-zone to me, like free will.

I am skeptical of observations of consciousness in animals. If they do experience it like we do, perhaps the conclusion should be that it is not so important after all. Consciousness could just be a trick we play on ourselves, like free will. Perhaps some form of self-awareness is just useful in nature, but at its most basuc level, does not include the thought-luggage our human brains associate with it.

All that to state that I am just very skeptical of all this.

But that also means you can get an old Dahon or Strada that works great for 250€.

The Brompton is ridiculously compact and high quality. I’m very happy I got myself a used Brompton (bought it this year - made in 2015).

Berlin is pretty big, the author seems to have chosen to live in the 'hipster' and 'edgy' parts and then complained about it as if it was all that Berlin was. There is a whole dull world underneath all that with chill people that don't take part in whatever the author is complaining about.

    It's a weird article.

I had everything in group folders on four homescreens organized by frequency of use till now, but noticed a lot of overlaps with widgets and smart stacks.

I’m in the process of getting it down to two homescreens with no group folders and relying on the widget and App Library screens iOS provides. The automatic grouping there is a little annoying (Podcast app is in Health?) but I can get used to it rather than thinking up my own.

That’s my question. I already have email address for my Wordpress site and I can forward those to something other than Outlook, it’s a good way to (sorta) become independent of an email provider, but what if that data is also sold to third party apps?

This reminded me of a Redditor that kept on posting AI generated game ideas to the indie development subreddit I moderate. It just annoyed everyone, even if some of the ideas could be successful games. And the AI flavoring in the response made the audience the complete opposite of receptive.

I think they need to ask themselves first if the community would welcome AI responses - the answer so far is almost always no because we expect human to human interactions (…for now).

That is exactly how I comment on Tildes. I even have a specific follow-up comment I need to write about writing that I never got to.

I think everyone has their own reason why they „hit and run” on here, but for me it’s probably best explained by an annoyance that carried over from reddit - getting burned out by an intense discussion with so many users. I always remind myself that a public comment on social media is not a one-on-one dialogue, it’s talking to a crowd with a lot of mics handed out in the audience.

I also don’t like answering to posts that sound like monologues, that feels the same as commenting on a news article or YouTube video, hoping that the author reads your reply.

Maybe it’s all just too much „social media burnout” for me.

Analysis of Ludwig van Beethoven’s DNA revealed that he had a low genetic predisposition for musical ability

The title is misleading, analysis of his DNA revealed nothing, the study as a whole revealed a weird result that highlights the difficulty of using PGI.
