  1. Those who journal, how do you do so authentically? (How to stop “self-editing” or “censoring” yourself and your thoughts?)

I have tried and failed to journal many times in the past. I always find myself self-editing, avoiding writing certain thoughts or feelings and just overall not being as authentic or honest or genuine as I should be to actually get some value out of journaling. I wish I could get over this “self-censoring” habit because I love reading and writing and really think journaling could be a great outlet for me.

So, I ask, what tips do you have to help write? To help actually get your thoughts and feelings out on the page, without judging yourself or feeling self conscious or critical? What do you write? What do you find helps you write more honestly and genuinely?

Could really use some help and guidance.

What are some great history books that stuck with you after you finished them? Or that led you down deeper rabbit holes of learning? I’m not even looking solely for nonfiction (historical fiction is great too).

I’ve been on a huge history kick lately…just all periods. I want to learn everything and have been craving more and more awesome, gripping and engaging history books. Some stuff I’ve enjoyed recently:

Accidental Presidents by Jared Cohen- presents an amazing background of various presidents who died in office and were succeeded by their vice president, who each became unlikely leaders and changed the course of US history in a myriad of ways. Super interesting and tons of tidbits that I never knew!

Bloodlands by Timothy Snyder - I admit I don’t know a ton about WW2 and the Holocaust beyond most of what you learn or hear about in popular culture. This book was mind boggling and devastating. The amount of killing and torture that Hitler and Stalin effectuated on their own people is astounding and horrendous.

The Women by Kristin Hannah - I know this isn’t “history”, but historical fiction, but I still loved the emotion in this book. I have never dove much into Vietnam war era stories so this was super interesting. I would love to learn more about this time in world history.

SPQR by Mary Beard - I’d love to expand my knowledge of the Roman Empire…candidly I haven’t finished this book (it’s been a bit dry for me), but the topic is so intriguing I really want to keep at it and learn more. Any Roman History book suggestions?

One downside to Kindle is that if I import an .epub or .pdf file from somewhere else (i.e., not purchased from the kindle store), the app/kindle doesn’t seem to recognize my highlights at all…so they’re lost and it’s really difficult to go back and review those markups.

I would love to use something like this. Obsidian stresses me out, for some reason. I have tried to get into it, and have failed, like four times. I just can’t figure out the best way to make it work for me. Or perhaps I can figure out for myself why I need to use something like Obsidian and how it would benefit me.

    Do you analyze by head?

Do you write out long lists of pros and cons on paper?

Do you consult a lot of family and friends and then go by consensus majority?

Do you overanalyze and agonize and hit decision paralysis? If so, how do you get over that or push through it?

As the title indicates, I am curious how folks have “gone with their gut intuition”, especially in circumstances where they are faced with tough decisions or life-altering changes. Some thoughts/prompts for discussion:

    • What does your “gut” feel like to you?
    • How do you reconcile differences between your “gut feeling” and what your brain is thinking/telling you?
    • How do you get to the point where you decide to “go with your gut”?
    • Can you share examples of when you went against your brain, and followed your gut, and it turned out to totally be the right decision for you?
    • Do you have any examples of when you followed your gut intuition, instead of what your brain/logical mind was telling you, and it came back to bite you?
    • How have you learned to “trust your gut”?
    • What tactics or steps have you learned to take when trying to parse between what your “gut” is telling you and what your “brain” is telling you?

Curious how other people listen to their gut and use that intuition to make decisions or choose which direction to go in (concerning life stuff, career stuff, relationship issues, etc.).

I aspire to better equip myself as a researcher and writer. As part of this, for me at least, I think that developing a note-taking (or marginalia) system would be useful. I read a ton of nonfiction and have especially been into history, economics, and geopolitics lately…but my “system” tends to just “highlight” insightful stuff in my Kindle and then…everything kinda falls off the map for me. I should probably start going back, reviewing the highlights, and making notes in a separate notebook/app/document for later research and writing purposes.

I thought it might be interesting to learn more about everyone’s reading/studying routine and specifically note-taking processes. I’m especially curious about those who blog/publish writings, and how they work to gather their thoughts and information as they are reading.

If you don’t mind sharing a bit about your note taking process or systems, here are some questions for discussion:

    1. What is your process, generally? (Do you read print/digital/audio? Does your note taking change depending on different formats? Do you highlight with specific colors for certain reasons? What do you find yourself notating most frequently?)

    2. Do you use pen/paper or is there a specific app you like to use for note-taking/research purposes?

    3. If you use an app, what is your process for book notes? Do you take notes on paper and then transfer it to the digital app later when you’re reviewing? Do you take notes directly into the app?

    4. Any other advice for someone looking to improve their learning/knowledge through more focused and intentional reading and note taking?

I know am WAY late to the party but I have been trying to get into RSS as a way of decreasing the amount of time I spend “wasting” on social media, but still wanting to get that little dopamine hit from opening up an app and learning new stuff or seeing new content. I’m not super familiar with RSS feeds, beyond them being “content aggregators”, and I have been kind of overwhelmed with trying to get started.

What is the best RSS reader for a “beginner”? And what is the best way to get one started for myself? Say I want to add all the links posted in this topic…do I just add them all into the reader and then I’m good to go? How do I go about filtering the content and siphoning through the clutter that I end up not wanting to view?

This may be a bit more “advanced” than Uprooted, but Robin Hobb’s Assassin’s Apprentice trilogy is one of my favorite series I’ve read this year.

Deep and moving characters, a large and believable world with just enough lore and back story to keep you reading; tons of moral dilemmas; light love stories; sweet and moving relationships with animals; magic and mysticism and stealth warfare.

    I really enjoyed them.
