'Ant-Man: Quantumania' won't stream on Disney Plus for weeks (or months), sorry. Disney has been stretching out the time that films spend only in theaters

Black Panther 2 was in theaters in early/mid November, and only released on streaming 2 weeks ago. So it would make very little sense if the next installment in the MCU would not take at least 2½-3 months to reach streaming.

I was only tangentially aware because I wanted to see if the new Black Panther was any good, checked when it was going to be available, found out it was going to be a while, and promptly forgot about it, for example - I might actually watch it today now this has reminded me!

Since the pandemic, most non-Disney studios have settled on 45 days between theatrical and home releases. As the article mentions, the big hold out was Top Gun: Maverick because Paramount saw that it was making money and just kept holding off on the home video release to keep the theatrical numbers going.

But I think that model only works for big movies though. I genuinely think that smaller movies will eventually be just straight to video, with the rare exception for something like M3gan that goes theatrical and becomes a hit. It'll be interesting to see how Evil Dead Rise does, since it's being upgraded from streaming to theatrical.

Top Gun was in its situation because of Cruise’s sway at Paramount. He’s basically their #1 IP, and they actually kept trying to make deals with him to put it on streaming earlier.

They pushed films onto streaming services quickly because of the pandemic. It would make sense to encourage people to visit theaters again.
