Are there any new shows available like Patriot Act or The Daily Show?
I've recently been watching the old episodes of Patriot act, and it occured to me that since we cut the cord with regular cable I have no clue if there is a contemporary analog for that show. Basically, a left leaning, comedic news and current events show that tends toward actually doing it's homework on the topics covered would be awesome.
Jon Stewart has a show on Apple+: The Problem with Jon Stewart. More of a weekly topic-du-jour show akin to Last Week Tonight though, as opposed to the more freewheeling Daily Show.
The one I'm familiar with is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_Week_Tonight_with_John_Oliver
How did I forget about that show? Thank you for reminding me!
It's worth noting that a lot of these studio-baked shows have been off the air for months due to the strikes, so the well is fairly dry covering recent events. Podcasts kind of fill that void now, e.g. Crooked Media (okay, those are a bit more than just "left-leaning" and independent outfits like QAA or "Well There's Your Problem".
I think Some More News is pretty much exactly what you're looking for.
some of the humor is a bit sophomoric at times. I get the impression they're trying to appeal to teenagers and young people who are interested in politics and current events (providing a left-leaning alternative to sources like PragerU, essentially)
but it's well researched and they make a point of citing their sources, both in the video by showing the headline and news outlet they're referencing, as well as with a Google doc linked in the video description with all the relevant links.
Thanks for the link! I had a look at the top episode on the yt page, and it's pretty close for sure. I'll watch a few more tonight and see how it goes.
It's a goddamn shame what happened to the Gravel Institute.
It was like a perfect counter to shit like PragerU, but I guess after Mike Gravel died, the funding just wasn't there.
I really enjoyed watching "A Closer Look" excerpts on YouTube to recap the day's political craziness; Seth Myers has great chemistry with his audience and staff. Unfortunately the writers strike has put the whole show on hold, but keep an eye out for it if/when the strike is resolved.
I like him too but his obsession with Trump is ruining it for me unfortunately.
