It's been kind of a wild journey in the Paramount sale. Skydance recently gave them their best and final offer. Share holders don't want Skydance though, and Apollo had expressed interest in purchasing them a few months ago. They recently brought Sony on board to show that they will have experienced film execs handling the studio.

The reason shareholders don't want Skydance is simple: It won't result in them getting money. The Skydance plan relies on Ellison buying National Amusements and using their controlling stake in Paramount to then merge with Skydance. Ellison is using money from his father, Larry Ellison, to make the purchase.

The Apollo deal would be a lot more lucrative. And whoever takes control over Paramount is going to be selling assets. One way or another, though the general sentiment is Apollo is going to completely strip Paramount down.

I don't really see either sale as being more positive than the other if I'm being honest. The one thing I don't like, that both parties are kind of in agreement of, is that they want to sell off CBS. I think CBS is more valuable than a lot of the other stuff Paramount owns like MTV or whatever.

In terms of IP stuff, again, I don't really think there would be much of a difference. I guess, creatively, Skydance would be more likely to deliver quality products from Paramount's IP. But I think the result is going to be ultimately the same. Paramount's IP isn't lucrative. The Star Trek films never broke 500M WW, that's not good for a supposed flagship franchise. The Transformer and GI Joe IP have been on the decline for a very long time now. And they can't solely rely on Tom Cruise, he's going to die eventually.

That's not really why they want to sell anyway. They want to sell cause linear TV is going down the drain and they're losing so much money on that. They had the opportunity to sell Showtime for a good amount of money and they didn't, now it's not even worth that much. Not to mention the continued losses they've incurred on Paramount+. I think there's a good chance that whoever ends up with Paramount is going to be shutting down the streaming service.

Here's a good article from a few months ago about Paramount's troubles. They went hard into streaming and failed. Paramount+ only has like 1% of the market. They lost $1.5B in 2023. It's not long...

Sony owning Star Trek would be very, very, strange.

Let Disney buy Paramount. Then we can have Star Trek Wars. All of the nerds (me among them) go full tilt Dune and start our jihad.

I thought Skydance was something of a lock at this point, but anyone can surprise anybody at this point. Sony's MO is to be an arms dealer in the streaming war, but would they dismantle Paramount+ when they could claim and infuse it with Sony content?

The issue with the Skydance deal is that the shareholders will sue the hell out of Redstone. She has a responsibility to the shareholders and if she has two deal available and takes the one that doesn’t benefit them, they will bring that shit to litigation.
