I have recently finished reading "How to" by Randall Munroe, author of XKCD web-comic.

If you like XKCD, you should definitely buy his books. I read through What if and How to so far and both are great. You wouldn't believe how you can approach answering normal question like "How to dig a hole". It is very refreshing read, you won't get bored and actually learn along - for example he very roughly estimates a formula for how far a person can throw an object and this formula corresponds with real life results quite well. The same goes for high jump where he lands a few percent off.

I don't know about other translations but in Czech one the translator went as far as recalculating some of the examples so that Czech readers can reference it to our country/life. And included some notes of his own.

I have looked into the "Thing explainer" as well, which is illustrated book where Randall Munroe explains things by using only 1000 of most used (English) words. This books is once again translated to Czech (amd other languages), which added quite a challenge to translator. You can't use 1000 of most used Czech words as his would need rewriting basically the whole book. But you can't translate it word for word as this would add up to more than 1000 words (after translation). Translator actually used 1000 words to translate the book, all of which are written down in the book as well as a word frm translato on how he approached this problem. I don't need to say that this book is also awesome!

I do this with captchas! If I have time and am in the mood, I keep checking bad boxes (yet some that at least resemble what they want like chimney = hydrant, road crossing = stairs, motorcycle = bicycle etc.) and eventually it will accept my bad input. It works, obviously, as I was served many caotchas where there was big picture of motorcycle.divided into squares and I had to check squares where there is bicycle. Or the same with I believe bus and hydrant - one thing on the image but completely other that I had to check.

I'm absolutely certain that some software engineers somewhere love me! :-D

He definitely could have used Windows with that "Please activate Windows" overlay. The OS is very permissive if you don't have license.

Ain't it sad that you have to search for Github script to be able to use OS that you bought? He has the license, it just can't be activated by normal means. And since he runs Linux for quite some time already and didn't find single use where he would need Windows back, I'm not installing it ever again. I'd rather spend my time (and sanity) elsewhere.

But thabks for heads up with the script. It may come in useful in the future. This isn't the only PC that has/had Windows around me.

My thought on this? I use Linux since around 2010. I don't have single need to use Windows. My answer is kinda obvious, isn't it?

To add something to discussion - recently I did reintall on relatove's PC. Had Windows 10, I swapped moherboard, CPU, RAM and added one SSD and did clean install. Since I forgot which version he got, I selected Home. Later, after it didn't activate through his Microsoft account, I had to reassemble the old PC and have a look at the licence. Of course, he has Pro. So I went for clean install on new hardware selecting Pro this time. And what do you know? It didn't activate either. I know you have to do some clicking around to let Windows know you are on new hardware but this led nowhere. Finally I found that there is hanging Windows 10 Home activation-attempt on this very hardware but since I formatted the drive to install Pro, I couldn't boot into it anymore. So I was stuck being unable to boot into Home install to try to remedy this and unable to activate Pro. Guess how this ended? Yes, Ubuntu. I know, I could have gotten on hotline and try to do something with it. But it was Sunday, I spent a few hours trying stuff and was fed up already. And guess what? Said relative uses the PC as if it were running Windows - he can read web, watch movies, listen to music, play games...

If Microsoft wants to make OS that acts up like this in paid subscription model, I can only wish them luck - they're gonna need it.

But let me make a prediction here: If Microsoft does it, people will be furious about it but majority of them (90%+) will pay anyway.

People are unteachable about this stuff. Have a look at gaming industry where microtransactions make so much money... Or movies where you have many different providers and many people pay for a few of them at once... If people are not going to say "No", they will get what they deserve.

And we want to call that AI? Instead of artificial intelligence, this should be artificial dumbness.

This perfectly shows that thereis nothing inteligent behind he amswers, it is just a big algorithmic language model. It doesn't think, it just sorts out and spit out output based on some "knowledge" (it doesn't "know", it just has some facts, whether true or not, at its disposal).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-AI. But in its current form, it's not the AI that I imagine. Once it is sentient and thinks by itself, it would be AI. Think VIKI from I, robot movie. Or Skynet from Terminator. Today's AI is just a really big machine that was handed data and acts upon them to answer your query.

    I play ARMA3 with a few friends.

We were playing Hidden & Dangerous 2 kinda since we got it and had decent internet and did that on/off style (heavy playing and then year or afew years nothing). We loved some aspects of the game, specifically limited carry weight, limited line of sight (distance from which you can he seen), crawling has actual benefits in this game (other than lower profile for enemy to shoot at) and most of all kinda realistic difficulty where one or two shots get you killed. Since the game is over 20 years old it doesn't cope well with our systems - friends use Windows 10 and I use Linux. We were able to get it running everytime, but the hassle to make it happen...

So I came up with and idea to buy something more modern, new, still alive. And after a few tips ARMA3 got diacounted and that was it. We paid like 6€ each for their own copy on Steam and later bought Apex DLC. We are lone wolves, we play on my OpenVPN by direct connection to server, we do not play public games or servers. Sometimes we play only in two persons, sometimes we gotnlucky and played four people. We do coop, obviously - combat patrol mode. And Apex coop campaign.

ARMA3 is great for us as it brings all the things H&D2 had and also many new features. It is difficult - you are shot at by someone you don't see, you can bekilled with one bullet, you ca carry only so much things, you can't sprint forever, you should use cover... But you ca adjust the AI difficulty to your liking and also have some thins turned on for better enjoyment and easier play if you want (like highlighting enemies). We tend to play rather realistic but with lowered AI difficulty, as we play it to have fun and not get frustrated.

We are not actually looking for bigger group as we are all Czech and we speak Czech when we play. Our spoken English is limited an we are no pros so we may not be up to standards of others (we certainly aren't).

It is great game for smeone who wants more than corridor shooter where you feel like Rambo.

This comment reminds me of my situation with Youtube. It is kinda szrange that Youtube with the amount of ads it has in past months has finally forced me to take my money and spend it on removing ads from videos. But it took unexpected turn for them, as I put my money in Nebula instead of Youtube Premium. Big corporations will eventually force more and more people to pay for services - but it may not be their services people will actually pay for.

I'm still replaying Witcher 3 (for he last 6 or 7 weeks). I have clocked over 100 hours, I'm doing Death March difficulty (highest) and going for 100% run (actually what I can get naturally without making checklist) including DLCs. I'm expecting another 100 hours...

So if you wanted a summary - this is a loooooooong game. But it is so great that it doesn't bore you and drives you to keep exploring, doing stuff, going forward. I don't use ANY fast travel except a horse. I ride or walk everywhere and this includes Skellige where I swim everywhere. Yes, swim, not ride a boat, just swim. This of course adds up on top of playtime but I don't care, I enjoy the game and that's what's important to me.

Even on highest difficulty Wotcher 3 isn't that hard. It's not Dark Souls hard, Witcher 3 is rather "just about" hard on highest difficulty. You ca get killed very easily but if you fight using all the techniques, skills and potions and oils, you are not going to have problems.

I have written about this game quite a lot already in previous threads, so just to do abit of summary: It still stays strong today, world is very well done with its problems and quirks, quests are plenty, colorful and can be very long, not just ordinary "fetch me 5 of these", quite the contrary. Witcher 3 is still worth paying for and playing.

I olay on Steam Deck and I use classic lre-next-gen version (because next-gen eats up resources much much more and doesn't look that much better on small screen). Runs absolutely perfect, no crashes or bugs.

You could buy USB-C PD powerbak for like 10-20$ and call it a day :-) I managed to get big one (like 80Wh) that can do even USB-C PD 20V for 40$. And it's not cheap knock-off or clone or some oher crap, this one really has the capacity and output voltage. It is made for local seller though, not available worldwide (at least not under the same name).

I have also adapted LIDL supermarket power tools battery + USB accessory to run such soldering iron (here with my TS100, it would work with Pinecil too). That was before I got Pinecil.

Does USB-C PD, runs from powerbanks (12V is enough, 20V gives you more power, as the tip is just resistive load -> more voltage, faster heating and more power), IMHO you can't get anything better for the price! It is 27$ I believe, but I had to pay VAT and shipping (so I added two soldering tips kits to my shipment for good measure).

It can run from the barrel jack too accepting up o 24V (probably not 24V lead acid batterues that will actually have more like 26-27V). But given how flexible it is, it is great to take with you literally everywhere.

Hobby: Electronics, programming, kinda DIY automation

If I presume they are interested in electronics and just don't know how to start:

    • buy a soldering iron, specifically Pinecil (50$ with VAT and shipping)
    • buy locally good leaded solder (25$)
    • buy some starter kits on Ebay or similar (don't know here... say 50$ and include also sensor kits, not just electronics parts, including solderless breadboard and jumper wires)
    • buy decent multimeter (50$) and cheap one (10$) for auxiliary measurements
    • buy parts detector/meter (10$)
    • I'm left with say 50$ that I would use to buy mix of things like Arduino clones, ESP8266, Raspberry RP 2040 boards (with wifi) and maybe used Raspberry Pi 3/4 (or new if budget allows)

This should get one started in soldering, electronics, programming, automation etc. It is quite a mix of things and if one wanted to narrow the path, it would cough up some cash back and let it be used on more specific thing in said path (ie. don't buy some starter kits or Arduino clones and spend the money on Raspberry Pi).

You have sparked my interest. I knew about Nebula for long time, but reading commenta here made me think again and a bit harder.

I'm probably one of a few tech savvy people that don't use any ad blocking tools. Since Youtube started pushing a lot more ads lately (unskippable pre-roll and mid-roll and also "immediate mid-roll when you skipped manually somewhere") I basically stopped visiting the site.

I follow many people on Odysee, which is (mostly) ad free and not as good experience (but still very usable) - people who use Odysee as kinda backup, so they have the same videos on YT and Odysee. These include EEVblog, ElectroBOOM, NileRed (or Blue? One of the channels for sure), bigclivedotcom, Hardware Unboxed and many other I don't remember on top of my head.

I pay for LTT (all.channels) on Floatplane.

So my situation is a bit... dire? Well, not really, I'm not a slave to videos that much. But having the means to watch worthy creators may be worth those money for me. I'm really thinking about signing up for at least month (5$ is nothing compared to what I may be ale to discover) and going through the creators and then see if it's worth investing for yearly subscription.

It's unbelievable how big players that keep f**king up with their services - be it everyone having their own service like Disney+, Nerflix, Amazon Prime... Or Youtibe that keeps pushing ads heavily in the "free version" - pushed me to actually put my money into streaming... But in different way then they expected - by paying the creators instead of distributors.

I'm setting up Nebula account right after I hit "Post comment". I have to start at some time and it is now :-)

    EDIT: Done.
