Also while searching for the correct title, I found that the first result on google is a complete PDF of the book (though I can't guarantee it's a legally-free copy). Alternatively, Amazon has it for ~50 USD.

Yeah, it's the common problem of it jumping around like mad. In fact I often have more luck scrolling in the opposite direction when I use the wheel, but I've mostly got out of that habit after assigning the side buttons as PgUp/PgDn instead. The tipping point for me was actually playing Apex Legends, where the only way to look through people's kill boxes is using the wheel.

Unfortunately I had to send the original back to the retailer for them to verify the warranty claim, so they'll probably keep it. Still, it's good to know that there's an easy fix if it happens again!

I was into FPs a while back but then found that I had all of the pens I'd realistically need so i stopped keeping up with things. Strangely, in spite of all of the more luxury brands I've owned or tried, I'm more than happy with my brass body Pilot Elabo (formerly Falcon) SEF and lighter Pilot Prera F - I could get rid of all of my other pens (save for maybe a Safari for beat-up work) and probably not notice much of a difference 99% of the time.

Similarly, Diamine Saddle Brown is the only ink that I'd really be disappointed if I had to give up, and most of the time I'm using a generic blue ink anyway (currently Edelstein Tanzanite that I was given as part of a present).

I'm enjoying the game, which is somewhat surprising because I haven't played a FPS much since the BF2 days (I've messed with some singleplayer games from time to time, and I gave BF1 a shot when it came out, though). I've completely forgotten how to do the most basic things, but it's slowly coming back.

At the moment, though, it seems like my favourite characters are Memory Location 0x00000000 and Party Not Ready.

I've had a similar issue in the past. I was using a Bluehost plan as a staging server for some webdev work I was doing at the time, and ended up pulling my hair out because some things just weren't working at all.

Turns out, without notifying me they'd added some plugins to the wordpress part of the site as must-use (so they're forcibly loaded, are stored in a different directory in the filesystem and don't show up on the WP plugins list) - ostensibly for caching to make the site faster and reduce server load (which is BS anyway, because the server capability is part of what you're paying for) but from a quick look at the code there was some other stuff going on (including phoning home) that was causing issues with everything else.

Never again will I be giving money to a company that pulls shit like that.

And if you don't, the games themselves are often stored on media so fragile that they're an archivist's nightmare.

it's a big damn problem for games, because it's a complete and utter pain in the ass to copy them off proprietary media and then build a deeply complicated program to emulate the functionality of the original hardware platform.

Possibly - they might package it strangely or not pickle them as much? Like every food item, different bands can be stronger/weaker, etc.

Over the years I've spent weeks at a time trying just to get single drivers or programs working correctly, even with extant documentation and a relatively helpful and knowledgeable community. The thought of having to do that with even more fundamental aspects of the OS is... not enticing.

While I'm sure I'd learn a fair bit, I'd rather place various appendages in a vat of acid than go through the stress and frustration of things not working even though you've followed the instructions to the letter, then scrubbed everything and started from scratch again a dozen times just in case only to find out that the problem is the kernel won't acknowledge IO from the left half of your model of keyboard if you sneezed during the previous Wednesday.

Having worked in webdev, I can't find it in me to shed a tear for Microsoft's browsers going the way of the dodo. Not a big fan of the decision to use Chromium as a base for the replacement, though.

Your comment made me wonder - has there been any study done on whether religious people are (statistically) more likely to accept certain fallacies like appeals to authority or post-hoc reasoning than non-religious people? It seems like a pretty basic question so I wouldn't be surprised if someone's looked into that somewhere.

I think BLOOD was the only monolith game that I ever finished, but I definitely remember playing through (most of?) the first NOLF. Was pretty fun, though iirc not 100% polished.

Tell nobody at all, put aside maybe 20k for any intermediate expenses and put the remainder somewhere with the least substantial risk (probably diversified to some extent, but making a profit not being a consideration at all - I'd even be willing to shoulder a small loss if it came to that) for a few years. Continue life on the current trajectory for the next 1-2 years, but spend that time seriously rethinking what to do with my life (and in a broader sense, the money) now that practically every barrier is no longer a problem. Probably the first things I'd be considering would be ways to help society outside of direct philanthropy and possibly enabling avenues for self-improvement, but realistically I'd have to admit the possibility that a better idea may come along if I were to really think about it over time.

Part of the problem with these hypotheticals is that it encourages people to make quick decisions to come up with an answer, which is enjoyable but almost never actually produces what would be a reasonable course of action.

The tl;dr of the fighting games thing is that during the period when I was improving the most in my chosen game (SFIV), I decided to take on running a forum and doing community-management-type stuff for another game, and all of the work, stress and drama that came with that completely ruined it for me. I tried getting back into it when SFV came out, but IMO it isn't as good a game and I noticed that I still wasn't able to mentally approach the game properly so I dropped it pretty quickly.
