Mega has multiple streams and offline caching, Ultimate has access to exclusive merch, Free will remain Free. This seems to be a lot like Funimation's tiers, wonder if that is still an influence?...

The core $8-a-month service surpassed 3 million subscribers earlier this summer. It will continue as the “Fan” plan. The new levels will be “Mega Fan,” at $10 a month, and “Ultimate Fan,” for $15.

    • This seems to be a lot like Funimation's tiers, wonder if that is still an influence?
    • Is Crunchy still on the market for a new owner, and are they trying to have a value add for subscribers.
    • Comparing with HBO Max and DC Universe, Warner wants Crunchy to be it's own separate thing, with select pulls into HBO Max, presumably because people pay for it.
    • VRV is $10, US only, has offline streaming and the expanded Crunchyroll and Friends catalog. Going to assume that it's pretty much ded at the moment?

I'm surprised VRV is still around. I had it for 6 months and the entire time their Roku app was broken. And I don't just mean it had annoying bugs. Doing basic things like clicking on a show in the library or search menu would literally crash the Roku and cause the device to reboot. The only way I could watch content without it crashing was to add it manually to my watch list on another device first.

I don't use a Roku anymore, but I have no desire to go back to a service that clearly doesn't give a shit about its users. How anyone let their Roku app out the door is one of those project management horror stories I would love to hear sometime.

The app recently broke on the apple tv (gen 2). afaik there was no update, it just stopped being able to play videos. (Crunchyroll, not VRV) It sucks because it was convenient when it worked.

Crunchy is currently in negotiations to be acquired by Sony (as of nine days ago) . They are pushing for $1.5B as the purchase price and increasing their revenue from their existing base (what these tiers are asking) to likely entice and enhance their revenue profile for the year and their potential growth projections without increasing cost of business.

Crunchyroll library in Brazil is small but strong. I only subscribed this time because of One Piece. VPN is usually hit or miss. It’s a cat and mouse game.

I don't see the issue? Not only are those almost certainly not drawing the same efforts, but tbh the new tiers are a great value for a niche part of the audience and no change for the other part....

Surely the main draw for the $2 more a month is the offline caching if the streaming is as bad as mrbig says.

That is the other niche, yes, if you have the need for offline media. Personally I haven't had any issues streaming, although admittedly I have fairly good internet. Either way, honestly I think...

Either way, honestly I think it's a very fair price for the additions. CR doesn't have better resolution as a carrot to dangle so it makes sense to offer what they can, which is mostly additive.

I’m in Brazil, maybe there are regional differences in the service.
