inb4 "it costs me 500 dollars to watch a movie."

To put it into perspective, Fall Guy's 28 million opening weekend is lower than what Leitch's last film, Bullet Train, opened to in 2022; with half the production budget, a lower marketing budget, and worse reviews.

This is a shame since I initially thought this would be able to break out at the beginning of the year. Gosling and Blunt are both coming off of Barbenheimer, the film was well received, and it's a spectacle film. With superhero films really crashing, it felt like this had something to offer to audiences. It's from an auteur (I'll expand on that at a different date), it has a distinct style to it, and it's fun. I thought that would make it gross at least 200M DOM and maybe get close to 500M WW. It'd be great if it got to 200M WW now. Universal bet big on this being a tentpole, and they usually make good bets, but they lost on this one. It was the perfect storm for a movie to be a hit, and it just wasn't.

This is also the lowest start to the summer we've had in a long time. It's also the first time (excluding pandemic years 2020 and 2021) that the start of the Summer wasn't by a Marvel movie since 2006 when Mission Impossible 3 opened to over 40M, and the first time that the start of the summer wasn't a sequel since Kingdom of Heaven opened to less than 20M in 2005.

The Summer is looking bleak now, especially since the rest of May might see the rest of the big films open to less than 50M (Apes, Furiosa, Garfield, and IF). At this point I'm hopeful at least one of them could break out. Fall Guy's biggest problem was that it wasn't connected to a strong IP (no one remembers the TV show) and IP is the biggest determiner for what people deem "worth going to the theater for." So called event films.

The theater was basically empty, though.

Fall Guy was a modern Hal Needham movie, and we need more of those in the world. But if the box office looks like this, the chances are slim to none =(

The movie itself is a solid action rom-com. I came for Ryan Gosling but enjoyed Emily Blunt's character most, and I wish she had more screen time. Overall I'd give it a thumbs up.

My last three movies were Dune 2, Oppenheimer and Dune. I used to go to more movies but they rarely rise to the occasion anymore. I'm not entirely sure why.

Specifically to The Fall Guy, I imagine I'll stream it at some point. The concept never seemed believable to me because of the fact that Gosling was supposed to be the stuntman. In what world is he the stuntman instead of the leading man? I would love to know who else they were considering for the role. I would have been more interested if they took a well known stuntman and made them the lead. Obviously that would never happen at $130 million, but I would find that idea a lot more interesting.

Stuntmen are amazing and vital parts of the film industry, but they are stuntmen and not actors. Surely it makes more sense for an actor to play a stuntman (and I assume, have any actual stunts performed by an actual stuntman) than vice versa.

That's great. I love watching him just start flailing his arms entirely voluntarily too.

Yes. And yes, I realize stuntman are not actors and it would never happen, except when it does like Jackie Chan.

I just don't think a whole lot is worth the price of admission anymore. I am not going to bother with it for anything other than truly grand films now because of how expensive it is now and how rare it is to get an audience that is properly quiet. I just don't want to deal with it. Besides, most movies are on home release like 2 months after their cinema release date, so it's not at all a big deal to wait. It was different in the past when you had to wait like 6 months for the Blu-ray

Yeah, I think my reasons are probably similar. Definitely too expensive, but I also go to VIP to avoid loud people and make it more of a date night with my wife. Obviously makes it more expensive then a normal movie, but not by much. Your second point is probably the main reason. Unless it's something I really want to see like Dune 2, I know I'll just eventually stream it.

I have the Alamo pass and go approximately weekly, as long as there are things that seem at least interesting. If I'm going to eat dinner out, I might as well see a movie too. I've seen plenty of films that didn't perform well or are hardly talked about, but were great. (I'd actually be tempted to rank Killers of the Flower Moon over Oppenheimer.) American Fiction, Gran Turismo, Dungeons and Dragons and A Haunting in Venice were a handful that were entertaining and underrated.

I just saw The Fall Guy last night. It was a fun action comedy and I definitely recommend it. A couple of nights prior, I saw The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which was also good.

Over the last few years it feels like there's been a massive increase in internet interest in box office gross

The perspective of an increase might just be because of me posting this stuff on here. Discussing the box office has been a thing on the internet for about two decades now (from what I've been aware) there was a lot of discussion about it on imdb forms and whatnot.

I mean I find the movie business very interesting and I think, because movies are a mix of business and art it's good to know about both. Hits and flops kind of decide what direction the industry will go, what types of movies get made and what types of movies don't. You don't have to know about that stuff, but it's not like it doesn't matter either.

Perhaps just box_office then would be a useful, common tag?

As long as people don't tag every every discussion about films with box_office, otherwise everything would end up being filtered out.

I don't put tags on my posts, I usually wait for the mods to handle that cause I'm not ever sure what I'm supposed to be writing on there. But I guess I can start doing that if it's a big problem.

Hopefully in time we find better ways to automate that task so it's less human-intensive.

Yup, even just including a few tags about the article's primary subject matter (e.g. including box office for box office focused articles) helps a great deal, and would be appreciated.

Even if the tags people include on their submissions end up needing to be edited to conform to the established standards, IMO, that's still way better than leaving the tags entirely blank. I would much rather correct a few tagging mistakes than be forced to actually read dozens of articles per day about subjects I have absolutely no interest in, just to extract all the appropriate tags myself.

p.s. But just to be clear, finding and submitting interesting articles is still by far the most important thing. And if people don't have the time, ability, or inclination to add any tags on their submissions, it's not the end of the world. Any help with tags would genuinely be appreciated though.

The title makes me think it's a kids movie. I don't know exactly why that is, beyond having a similar name to the game Fall Guys which was kind of aimed at kids.
