TV Tuesdays Free Talk
Have you watched any TV shows recently you want to discuss? Any shows you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
Finished up Marvelous Mrs Maisel, bit of a disappointing ending but a good last season overall. I don’t always finish tv shows so the fact that I actually stuck with this through the end is impressive to myself. Especially when I started watching it from the very beginning of the Amazon Pilot Program.
Speaking of which have not caught up with Succession. I lost a lot of interest in the show. But on a box office forum I’m on they were talking about it and someone made an interesting point of it. In that it’s a show that doesn’t have high ratings (it never reached the viewership of The Last of Us for example) but it appeals to the media types who write about TV. Apparently that’s what Mad Men was like. But yeah, maybe I’ll finish it.
I wish they had more time to wrap up the Maisel story -- it seemed like there were some loose ends (Joel's remarriage? Susie + Hedy? Susie's other clients?) that I'd love to see fleshed out.
Are the rumors that Amazon overextended on LotR and had to axe other shows (Expanse, Maisel) true? I'm always upset when a show comes to an end, though, so maybe I'm just looking for a reason to be angry with Amazon.
Binged all of Succession in a few weeks just in time for the finale. Absolutely flabbergasted when I talked with friends, and looked online, and people were actually rooting for Kendall. He's the worst. The finale was so, so fitting and good.
Started watching Barry. On the last season. It's good, not great, but interesting enough I'll probably finish it
Kendall really is the worst lol. He had moments of brilliance throughout the show, but he could never break away from his demons and his obsession with taking his father's place. I thought the last season was excellent and the ending was very fitting. Episode 3 and the kitchen scene with the siblings at their mom's are just phenomenally well written and acted. Kieren Culkin especially has some amazing performances
Some of the best TV I've watched. I'm excited to rewatch the show eventually, I think it will really hold up well.
Barry was OK. It has its moments, but I never felt really invested in the characters or story. After watching the first three seasons, I figured I'd finish it, but it's kind of out of my mind now.
Episode 3 and the meal for a king were some of my favorites, but also the funeral. If we're talking about Culkin that's the episode to point to.
It's all fun and games, it's all not real... until it is.

That's what made Succession so great imo. They took a group of absolutely deplorable human beings and made almost all of them likeable in their own bizarre way (except Shiv, of course).

the timing of the time jump introduction threw the pacing of the season off balance and made things feel a tad rushed)On the other hand, I've also been binge-watching The Dog House, a reality show that profiles people adopting dogs from an animal shelter in England. It's got the same feel-good vibe as GBBO or even First Dates but even better because ... dogs.
The Ted Lasso series finale was a work of art. there is just too much to talk about, just know that the entire series is excellent, even if you don't like soccer, and even if you don't like sports.

I personally hope they don't. The first two seasons are perfect television. The third season was... Not. (no hate to the folks who enjoyed it more than I did)
The loss of Brett Goldstein as a writer felt very noticeable. So many storylines that went nowhere and ended abruptly. So much walking in circles. Still loved the performances but the writing was not there for me.
The finale was perfect though.
And Goldstein is making Shrinking, which I love, so I'm gonna consider that my Ted Lasso spinoff haha.
Fair enough! Shrinking is incredible, but I didn’t know Goldstein was a writer for Ted Lasso. That makes a ton of sense as to why season 3’s pacing was so weird.
Part of me wants them too, part of me does not. I would happily watch a more football centric show about AFC Richmond. But I am ok with all the endings we got.
Been watching Silo. It's really very beautiful and the props, set, and costume design are all super cool. It's feeling a little empty so far though and I blame that more on the structure of the story than anything else.

They keep "killing" characters off and establishing new protagonists. Makes it hard to connect with the characters.
I read the books years ago so it was a very pleasant surprise to suddenly see the show had launched. I've been really enjoying it so far. It's very faithful to the books from what I remember.
Regarding the characters dying, here's an attempt to explain the approach without spoilers.
I believe that plotline following those characters in the first few episodes came out later in a prequel book. The actual book starts off mainly following Julia. The TV show can't have loads of characters doing exposition to set what happened during that stories in the first couple of episodes, so they took a show don't tell approach and just made that story episode 1 and 2, and some of 3 and 4.
The shows only just getting going with the plot and mystery. You're in for a real ride!
Have been really enjoying it so far, probably more so as a concept than anything else because of what you mentioned. But, it has my attention and I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of the season plays out.
We're rewatching 'ER', all of the seasons, for the second time. The interplay between medical drama, interpersonal office politics and romantic story lines with excellent writing keeps us hooked. The funny part is that the last time we watched it, I learned so many of the medical terms and procedures that when I told my daughter what I would do in a hospital emergency, what meds and procedures I would use, she laughed and said, 'thats exactly what Id do' She's an MD.
Now that Succession is over (loved it), I'm looking for a new show to get into. I've been really enjoying HBO's recent primetime series (House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, Succession). But their new series, The Idol, does not appeal to me and there seems to be a lot of negative discourse surrounding it. Any recommendations appreciated. My all-time favorite shows are Twin Peaks, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and Better Call Saul.
On a side note, maybe I'll just take a break from TV shows for a while, since my movie-watching frequency takes a hit when I'm working through a series.
With these shows being your favourites, I mean... Watching The Wire is a necessity at that point!

Fargo is one of my absolute favorites; The editing and the sound track are just top notch. The Wire is just one of those shows I have to rewatch every year too.
I'm incredibly excited for season two of Severance. I don't think I've anticipated a season 2 of a show as much as I'm looking forward to the next season of Severance.
Other HBO must watches from me are Watchmen, Chernobyl, Band of Brothers, and Newsroom.
Thanks! The only one of these I've seen is Euphoria, which I think is really well done stylistically even if its plot isn't so interesting to me. I think I'll go with The Wire next.

Wow, I have never seen such a hidden gem of a show. I guess its because its from a pretty unknown network MGM+ (was Epix) so I can see why it's not really talked about.
If you are looking for a good horror show, this is the one you have been looking for, seriously. It's currently airing its second season, so now is the time to get on it. I won't spoil anything, but the basic plot is: People find themselves entering a mysterious town that wont let them leave. During the day its just a rundown town, but at night, well.. you don't want to be caught outside at night. Stay indoors, make sure that rock by the door doesn't fall off. And for the love of god, don't listen to them if they start knocking on your windows! They are lying, don't let them inside.
The mysteries that the show presents are so god damn good. I don't know how they do it, but each episode they keep piling on the mystery and it just keeps getting more and more interesting. You will end up binge watching this one. Please listen to me and watch this.

Too bad it's on MGM+, I caught the first season on Prime (it may be coming down soon) & am hooked. It reminds me of Lost when that show was at its best. I'm just hoping they can explain everything sufficiently, I still hold a grudge against Lost for falling apart at the end. More people should be watching it.
“The Curious Case of Natalia Grace”… binged the entire 5 1/2 ish hours in one go. Super addicting true crime tale, highly recommended.
I'm really excited for "Unchained", the "Drive to Survive" of cycling.
Following last years Tour De France. It's hopefully going to be a banger as the tour last years was one of the best we've had in years!
Can't wait for more episodes of Deadloch. Currently we're watching it on Prime Video. It's a murder mystery/comedy written by the two Kate's behind The Katering Show.
I've finally started watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Or, I should say, started again. I watched the first few seasons 5+ years ago and then promptly stopped when I couldn't find where to legally stream the rest in Canada back then. I hadn't quite realized just how old the show was until this most recent re-watch, the first seasons definitely feel both visually and stylistically like a product of their time. I also forgot just how blurry non-HD TV could be!
The show definitely crosses lines that most can't or won't these days, but it's also very clever and most of the jokes do hold up. I also didn't realize how many call backs there are, such as Charlie and Mac attaching their 'Mens Party' invitation to the fight milk, the constant call backs to Dennis and D's addictions etc. It's also interesting seeing how much the characters evolve, or rather degrade, through the show. I've somehow remained spoiler free for most of the show, but from the bits I've heard about how far they go with Dennis its been fun watching him become more unhinged and deranged.
I've been quite interested in SILO. Curious and mysterious, I want to know what's going on!
I watched the final season of Barry. My wife was watching this show with me, but figured the show had told its story already after the finale last season. I decided to continue watching without her, and I am very glad I did. I was not aware that Bill Hader had such amazing acting Chops until finding this show. I would love to see him in more things, just very impressed overall.
I also want to just take a second to talk about Mr Inbetween. If you like Barry, then you should definitely check this show out. I have never met anyone in person who has watched it (before I reccomend it), and I have to say it's one of my favorite shows. So if you're looking for something to fill the Barry itch, check Mr Inbetween out.
I have also been watching a few episodes of the Clone High reprisal. Something is just... off... the obvious is Ghandi not in the show, and Cleo being put in the background, with her voice actor being replaced and having the original voice actor playing a completely new character. But it's more than that. I know it's been a long time in between seasons, but the show just doesn't have the same feel. I don't think I've had a serious laugh from any of the new episodes and the schmultzy corniness played for comedic value that was so well tuned in for season one seems to be completely missing. I don't know if I have more to say about it, it just doesn't feel like a proper continuation.
