“Many would say yes,” replies the teacher. “But I’m not here to indoctrinate anyone … And actually I’m required by law to say that thanks to slavery, Brazil experienced growth like never before.”

    Oh, FFS.

I'm really worried for our friends in Brazil. As much as I fret about the state of politics here in the US, the stuff going on abroad is really troubling. Between obvious indoctrination (in the name of being against indoctrination) coupled with the looming threat against what remains of the Amazon, Bolsonaro is a huge threat to regional and international stability and peace.

I tell you, the ongoing global rise in right-wing ideaology should be making us lose sleep at night. Bolsonaro, Trump, May, Duerte, etc... I know that they're not the problem, but rather a symptom of a rotting cancer that we thought we surgically removed 80 years ago. The cancer is trying to spread again.

only by proxy, for the most part, which is the problem. he has plausible deniability if shit hits the fan, because you can't definitively say him fucking up the amazon is going to feed into things...

only by proxy, for the most part, which is the problem. he has plausible deniability if shit hits the fan, because you can't definitively say him fucking up the amazon is going to feed into things like climate change that destabilize entire areas of the world. his anti-left policy might eventually lead to some sort of sectarian violence which he would be culpable for, but that's far from a given honestly. most people are likely to just keep their heads down during his presidency and hope for the best in 2022.

it's been going on for the better portion of this decade, so it's not like people aren't paying attention, it's just that it doesn't really matter because it reflects what a lot of voters think they want. you can say that alternative for germany is a crypto-fascist party and that's not wrong for example, but it also doesn't matter because a lot of people are also voting for their policies, not just voting for them because it rebukes the establishment. and it's not like people have been exactly conned into buying a lot of this: most of the resurgent populist right-wingers of this decade have been very open about what they want (if not necessarily about the endgame of their policies). even trump, lying shithead as he is, has pretty much delivered or tried to deliver on a lot of the things he campaigned on.

Uhhhhhhhh this smacks an awful lot of a facist crackdown on dissenters. Someone please tell me I'm wrong and Brazil is still safe.

that's because it is, lol. bolsonaro is literally an apologist for the brazilian military junta, and basically campaigned on exterminating leftism as one of his planks.

In my dream of dreams we would emerge from this stronger as a global society with a renewed focus on economic equality (which is what I think, personally, is the crux of the issue), but there's no indication that's going to happen. Progress, as ever, plods slowly due to machinations of the rich and mighty.
