So I have a personal connection to one of the people in this story and I have recieved more backstory supposedly through the embassy which I am going to paste here verbatim. Please be aware this is simply what we have been told and may turn out to be anecdotal.

So my cousin is an orthodontist, and she is one of the aid workers in that story. Apparently someone broke into the store room where they were keeping all the medical supplies and stole a bunch of stuff. So they called the police and the police tracked down the thieves. But the people who stole the medication turned around and said "look they are using expired medication" and it was a single inhaler that was expired.

The police arrested the canadian aid workers stating that they are using expired medication and do not have the proper permits for the medication. And they threw all the men in some prision in that northern town they are in, but they didnt have anywhere to keep the women, so they have been locked up in the back of a truck with no food, water, or beds or anything since monday.

But the canadian embassy is trying to get them out, but allegedly ethiopia has laws where you can't have foreign lawyers working on a case, so there is nothing they can do but wait for the Canadian government.

The staff at the hotel where they were staying has apparently been sneaking them food and water but as far as we are aware she is still in the back of the truck. Fucking wild.
