For Mother’s Day, I made three sauces to go on top of a New York style cheesecake. The cheesecake was bought from the store (as I was asked very last minute to get one). The three sauces I quickly threw together over about an hour or so were: a Raspberry sauce, a Raspberry ganache, and a plain ganache.

The raspberry sauce was simply lemon juice, raspberries, sugar, and a bit of vanilla extract. The ganache was made by using the left over raspberry pulp and mixing that with some heavy whipping cream and dark chocolate. The regular ganache was just some semi-sweet chocolate chips, heavy whipping cream, and a drop of vanilla extract.

Overall, everything turned out great. The raspberry sauce stole the show (dessert wise), and the regular ganache was a good backup for anyone that didn’t like raspberries. The raspberry ganache wasn’t completely eaten, so I have a bit left in my fridge, ready to be put on a bagel or some pound cake.

I initially wanted to add some mint to the raspberry sauce, but I know that my mother isn’t really a fan, so I opted to forgo that ingredient.

Overall, I’m really happy with how everything turned out since I didn’t use any official recipes. Mostly just knowledge from prior projects, like strawberry jams and cherry pie fillings, and then also tasting as I went.

Is there any (preferably sourced or backed by evidence) reason why it’s better to unlist a game versus simply cutting any further development? The unlisting thing is what baffles me as there are lots of games (ignoring ones that use licensed music/assets) that can stay up with a simple disclaimer that it’s sold “as is” and without further developer support.

I’m assuming it’s like what u/MimicSquid or u/Protected said, but I cannot personally find evidence (beyond what is assumed to be the case) of that occurring here. It feels like there’s some other “write off a failed investment” thing possibly going on with this, but that’s my own conspiracy imagination thinking that WB is somehow able to claim lost R&D costs or something similar. This may be my own fault of thinking that corporations are doing 4D chess instead of taking the most straightforward or simple way out.

I know it’s been a while since Francis Ford Coppola last made a film, and outside of Godfather part 1 and 2, Dracula, and Apocalypse Now, I’ve seen very little of his filmography. Are there any good films from him that I should see to get a feel on his more modern films? I have zero idea what the premise of Megalopolis is, and it seems like a film that’s best seen going into blind.

I was one of those people that used to eat out once a day (on average). Since the pandemic, I’ve been slowly cutting down and am now in the once a week to once every two weeks range, usually eating out as a social thing, either with family or friends.

Outside of that change, the rise in prices has (luckily) not hit me too hard. Possibly because of privilege, possibly because it turns out I really didn’t do much, outside of eating out, that cost cost me money. When I hang out with friends, we buy drinks at local stores and have them at my place (due to being the most central and being the one with the most “hosting” space). When I visit with family everyone brings a portion of the meal and we typically meet at one of our places. We normally either stay indoors and play board games or head out back and throw frisbee or just talk. On my own, I regularly hike, usually with my dog, and that is typically free.

I’ve noticed the biggest portion of my circle (of friends and family) that are experiencing the rising prices the hardest are the ones with kids. Going out to eat is basically a no-go, as a basic meal will run them $50+ at even a fast food place, and any location that requires membership is impossible unless it offers a family pass of some sort. I think this is mostly due to the fact that their “free” money to spend on things that are not essential is now being tied up in the constant need for food, clothes, rent/mortgage, and the irregular bill (like a car issue, doctor visit, or home repair) which has seen significant cost increases.

None of my group is struggling, per se, but they are definitely cutting back on anything that has a cost in the first place when it comes to socializing. If it can’t be done online or if it can’t be hosted at someone’s home then it’s too expensive since they need to set aside that money for the inevitable bill coming up. Most of which are close to twice the price they were just pre-2020.

Thanks! I think everyone had fun, which is the important part, which is good enough for me. I figured that my rocky time DM'ing might help other new DMs realize that even with mistakes, the session can be an enjoyable experience.

On that note, though, I definitely want to implement some improvements and everyone's suggestions here have been a great source of things to look into. I'm pretty excited to jump back in and have another session.

I was pretty overwhelmed by the massive selection of services to simulate tabletops, and so many of them either required or basically required by limiting features subscriptions that I gave up and just used a photo editor due to a lack of time. I'm hoping we get to meet in person more often than not, but I'll keep a note to check out Owlbear Rodeo if we ever need to do another remote session!

The random encounter/scenario list was actually an improvement that came to me after my (rocky) one-shot. It seems perfect since I can create possible scenarios and then adapt/improv them to better fit the situation without getting mad that I prepped something that now can't be used.

Improv is definitely something I need to work on though. I think I was able to keep things seemingly smooth, but there were so many curve balls that I needed a few moments to think of a proper reaction.

Yeah, 5e relies quite heavily on stat-blocks that are a bit tough (at least for someone as inexperienced as myself) to estimate on the fly. I do intend to prep some documents with generic encounters and include those stats in it to avoid repeating my mistake of accidentally buffing enemies due to scrambling through the Monster Manual haha!

Thanks for those links! I skimmed them just now but will do a more thorough read through this evening.

A part of the reason I did a one-shot instead of jumping straight into the campaign was to try and catch issues before I ended up accidentally burning myself out. I'm glad I did because I found a ton of spots where I would have been wasting time and energy on things that just don't ultimately matter.

A session 0 is planned to happen before we start the full campaign, and the plan is to go over character creation together, discuss expectations, and finally go over a couple house rules. I 100% plan on discussing if the players will want a more rail-roaded or more open ended adventure.

I'm excited for what will come next!

I have looked at other systems, but it seems like many of the group prefer 5e (probably more due to its popularity than its actual strengths). I'd have loved to try something closer to OSR, but I realized that simply convincing them to play at all was the hard part. I'm hoping that once the rest of the group gets more familiar with 5e they'll be more willing to learn something new, or at least give it a try for a one shot (that definitely won't take 7 hours this time I swear).

I actually used the Mythic system when prepping the adventure to give the NPCs more life and some quick backgrounds in case the players asked!

I recently hosted a DnD session, and learned a good bit from the experience. I figured my experience might be fun to some, if just to see the number of mistakes I made as a first time DM. Of course, I am open to any suggestions and tips other might have for running a campaign as well.

The initial plan was to use the one-shot as a way to figure out what did and did not work, and whether or not I'd be using my homebrew setting or an official module, before jumping into hosting a full campaign. There was not a session 0 for this, but there will be one prior to starting the actual campaign.

So this topic is something that could very easily just be bothering myself, but I figured I’d share before unsubscribing to ~misc. If this is the wrong group, I apologize, please feel free to move it to the correct location. I will also preface this by saying I only really view Tildes occasionally, and am not the most active user, so those two things might be contributing to this.

I am wondering if creating an official Politics group would be beneficial to Tildes. I’ve noticed that the majority of recent posts in ~misc is mostly regarding politics. I don’t want to necessarily just unsubscribe from ~misc, in case something non-political and interesting to myself ends up getting put there, but if that’s the solution I’m more than happy to do it.

I just figured that with the amount of activity going on there fairly regularly, either a dedicated ~politics group or a sub group (maybe ~misc.politics or ~news.politics?) would be better? That way other users similar to myself could unsubscribe to that instead of unsubscribing to the much broader ~misc group.

I personally do enjoy the way that Tildes is setup, and don’t see any bad interactions in those posts. It’s definitely more of a personal thing.

That said, I don’t want to make people think that I’m telling them how things should be run, merely throwing my two cents out there, no matter how worthless they are.

Thanks to everyone for posting, and to the mods/admin for keeping everything running smoothly. This really is a solid community!

Kind of a reverse to your question, I used to use the word “cuss” instead of curse. I then moved out of a small town a couple of hours west of Philadelphia, and learned that it is not as common of a term as I thought it was. Other, more cultural things that I’d mention, such as going to local Amish markets, or getting stuck behind a horse drawn buggy for miles at a time, would also get me weird looks.

Closer to the question you were actually asking, I’m (currently) in the Bible Belt, I find Baptist churches on just about every other corner of most streets. Someone once tried giving instructions by saying something along the lines of, “turn left on the street with the church,” while they were riding with me, and I had to have them clarify which of the three that were within eyesight they were referring to. Related: I once said, “you can’t throw a stick ten feet into the air without hitting a religious building down here,” and very few people in the group found it funny.

I just wanted to give a generic update since I’ve found myself a bit busy to respond to everyone individually:

First of all, thanks to everyone for their input. I have read every single response in this thread, and the advice and personal experiences have legitimately been fantastic to read. There is comfort in knowing that what I am feeling isn’t new. Even though there’s not a quick or easy fix, it’s nice to have my attention brought to things I did not think of, or to others that I did not give enough of a chance.

I had gone to therapy for about a year between late 2022 and early 2023, and stopped due to a change in jobs and the health insurance situation that it can cause in the states. I plan on going back, this time to a different therapist, once I can find one that doesn’t have a 3-4 month wait.

Regarding other changes I have made, I recently started using even Tildes less, as I feel some of the more “popular” or “active” posts are just making me feel worse regarding my outlook on things. I have also begun to simply log what I do each day in my journal and then give my thoughts on it the day after instead of doing both in the moment. I think that giving myself even just that 12-24 hour between logging actions and giving commentary has made me feel less required to analyze every action (or inaction) I take.

I know that everything is a process, and I’m not expecting immediate results, but knowing where to start, and being made aware of some of the preconceptions I have, seems to already have put me in a better place to work on myself mentally.

I once again want to thank everyone for their input, and I am sorry if I didn’t respond to you. I can only say that your words are not being taken for granted.

I feel like this is a fair assessment. I was definitely working to get to where I am now. I had a specific idea in mind, and I feel like I have achieved it, either through luck, or determination, or whatever mix of the two you'd like to attribute it to.

My two issues with setting future goals are: Firstly, I don't know what to work towards? And, secondly, do I just want to keep setting new goals for the sake of having something to work towards? Is that all I am meant to do? Roll the ball up the mountain, let it roll back down, and repeat?

I want to be clear, this is just my initial reaction, but I will definitely reflect on it and try and figure out why the reasons behind my reactions to it are they way that they are. I appreciate the help.

I think I agree with this take, to an extent. I look at the difference between Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and I think that the biggest difference is how visual Better Call Saul is. There are many moments of silent contemplation, the pauses after someone says something and the other character needs think about it, the beautiful visuals of the city, or desert, an icecream cone, or blue flower, that convey more than a line of dialogue ever could.

But then I also recognize that the dialogue delivered needs to be carefully crafted in such a way to allow for those moments to occur naturally.

It is definitely a balancing act of visuals to dialogue to music and even sounds effects. It's why I admire movies and television so much. The number of variables that go into it is astounding. You could get 100 different directors and each one would give you a different cut of the same script. And the director (while being super influential) is only a single variable.
