I would say test it out for a week, it takes some getting used to, but if you still don't like it maybe try out Goodnotes. I think Goodnotes works better on iOS devices, but not sure.

It sounds like you are describing the old OneNote...I think OneNote 2016 (they keep renaming everything). I am more familiar with OneNote for Windows 11 (10? I dunno the naming is ridiculous and always changing).

Basically you have notebooks, sections, and pages. With the desktop version you can also create sub pages, which are regular pages (and show up in the pages list) that are tabbed over slightly. If you have a page that has sub-pages it gets a little > which can be clicked to collapse/expand any sub-pages below the parent page. It makes it easier to organize as you don't need to make a lot of sections, when a page with sub-pages would work just as well (or better).

OneNote works to varying degrees on most (all?) devices. OneNote for Windows has the most features, and works very well on a Windows tablet with stylus (and BT keyboard with trackpoint or trackpad). To really organize your notes well you need the Windows version as it allows you to create sub-pages within your notebooks, which I haven't seen on the iOS and Android versions (it might be available on the web based version, can't remember). The sub-pages are helpful because you can create empty parent pages as page section dividers without creating actual new sections, which helps cut down on your use of section tabs and individual notebooks.

You can sync your notes to Microsoft's cloud (for free I think?), and they have a very hard to subcribe to subscription (they keep trying to upsell to more expensive services) called Microsoft 365 Basic for 1.99 USD/month that gives you 100 GB more OneDrive space.

The problem I have found with most other "note" taking apps is that they seem to be designed with a focus on typed notes over handwritten...which I do not really like. I strongly believe there is something about actually hand writing notes that helps commit information to memory better. I also feel that organizing one's notes manually creates a better sense of where the information is, rather than solely relying on tags and search features.

The only other app I have seen that seems somewhat close to OneNote is Goodnotes. However the UI seems less compact, and with less granularity. I've never used it though, only seen people using it.

It's the rank and file folks like us that I'm having trouble understanding their vehemence against the lab leak idea, resistance which persists. Maybe it's an unfortunate association early on with right wink conspiracy folks? That's sad if true.

I am having trouble with this too, also a bit of an emotional reaction. It's also odd to me the number of comments on Tildes that are against a lab leak theory. My opinion is pretty much 99% certainty that it was a lab leak due to human error (still just my opinion, I know). Also, isn't human error slightly less terrifying?

Some of my thoughts from the past few years:

    1. China and India are both known as countries where one can outsource medical research if the rules in one's own country are too strict.

    2. The US has admitted to funding research about coronaviruses in Wuhan.

    3. Yunnan and Laos both have towns that are solidly in what is known as the golden triangle, this area is not only known for being a massive drug production area (opium and meth), but also for: money laundering, gambling, human trafficking, call center scamming, sale of endangered wildlife, and human organ trafficking. Basically, you can't really trust what anyone says about these areas because they are about as minimally governed and corrupt as anywhere can be.

    4. Both of these areas are mountainous, and generally difficult to traverse outside of major cities and roads, i.e. people aren't going to easily stumble across coronavirus infected bats, unless they are actually looking for them.

    5. The cold chain in Laos is laughable, I can't see the transfer of coronavirus infected bat's being much more secure.

    6. Laos didn't have its first real outbreak of covid until a year or so in...when police illegally snuck an infected Lao national back into the country from Thailand. So again, how does it go from bats to humans, if it's not even going from bats to humans in one of the regions the bats are from?

I know everyone thinks it sounds like the start to a zombie movie, but google these (might end up on a list) towns: Bokeo and Mongla; and Kings Roman Group. If anything, it's the perfect region to set the opening of a zombie pandemic Hollywood movie.

Regarding air travel, I actually bring two messenger bags. A smaller Timbuk2 as my personal item (under the seat), and a much larger Chrome bag as my carry on (overhead).

On longer trips I would bring a third military loadout style bag with backpack straps for my checked luggage, and then wear all three looking like some kind of bizarre SF bicycle messenger-paratrooper 😅. Loadout bag on my back, Chrome bag reversed across my chest, and Timbuk2 hanging below the Chrome bag just above crotch level.

Not quite this absurd, but pretty close:

I think messenger bags or hip bags are a better way to go in a work environment, it's just hard for me to take the backpack look at all seriously.

I don't have too much useful to say. But I will state my own opinion on your two vices (from experience, not judgment):

    • Alcohol is for making boring hours interesting.
    • Cigarettes are for making boring minutes interesting.

Neither of these are good reasons for either.

I am also unsure of NA beverages, seems to me it's just better to go with water? Or maybe soda water (+flavor)? I guess you have to decide whether you actually miss the flavor of alcoholic beverages, or you're just trying to fake out your desire for alcohol.

Also the American midwestern accent is one of the closest accents to the mid-atlantic accent that has been modified for use by news casters because it is one of the easiest English language accents to understand. So if you want an easily understandable English language AI voice, odds are it's gonna sound like some random Jack or Diane from Indiana (suckin on a chili dog).

Just start writing anything. This is how I used to start papers in grad school when I had no idea where to start, even on really dry topics like international monetary systems. I would literally start off with random shit, e.g:

"Ugh why do I have to write this, this prof is such a hard ass, and international monetary systems are so tiring, I have to write about this thing (boring) and that thing (boringer!) just to make a point about this other thing. This one other other thing is kinda cool though, because...."

And then from there I'd have a reallllly shitty outline, but I could at least start researching one of the "boring" things, and then write about it after I felt comfortable enough with my understanding. Once you get a few paragraphs down about one topic, the others kind of fall into place, as in you know the sequence you want to go through in order to get to your end point....even if the initial topic you started on actually ends up right in the middle of the paper.

You mentioned programming, logic, and philosophy, maybe a fun topic would be what the internet will be like in 10 years after everything is completely enshittified. Is it really gonna just be a bunch of private VIP chat rooms that are invite only from in person meetings in meatspace? How would that be catalyzed safely in terms of programming/authentication? People used to do reddit meetups....now those don't happen so much because there are too many weirdos, would people be willing to go back to that just to gain access to a private chatroom/network?
